This thesis contributes to the understanding of the operational behavior of grease lubricated elastomeric radial shaft seals. Therefore, basic research is done on the tribological behavior of grease in a rubber-steel-tribocontact. This work is accom-panied by rheological and microscopic analyses of the used greases. These greases are model greases with a known composition. To reduce the number of unknown influences, a ring-on-disc test set up is used. With this test set up investigations are done on frictional behavior, supply with lubricant, wear and pumping rate in dependence of the grease. The results of these tests are validated in experiments using radial shaft seals. The thickener network is destroyed in the sealing gap by the high shear forces. But thickener particles remain in the sealing gap. They show a huge impact on the op-erational behavior of the tribosystem. Thereby, the influence of the thickener type is much bigger than the ones of the grease consistency or the base oil type. Correlations between the operational behavior and rheological properties of the greases are described. An estimation of the friction coefficient at mixed lubrication, the Gümbel number at the transition to hydrodynamic lubrication, the occurrence of starvation and the wear is achievable with these correlations. The definition of an ordinal number for thickener particles is a new approach to describe the influence of greases on the operational behavior of tribocontacts. This ordinal number groups the thickener particles by their shape and sorts each group on the size of the particles. This approach shows the dependence of frictional be-havior, wear and pumping on the appearance of thickener particles and thus on the grease type. The results are summarized in a functional model of grease lubricated radial shaft seals. With this model the processes in the sealing gap are described for the first time considering the influence of thickener particles.
