As one interface to other organizations, corporate sales and distribution departments are increasingly facing the challenge to efficiently and effectively execute collaboration intensive business processes across company boundaries. Especially sales and distribution departments for technical products feel the need to support those cross-company processes with appropriate information systems. What is required is to deal with high demands of mutual adjustment between the selling organization and the buying organization, for example with regard to product variants. The first step of this work was to examine the state of the art in the area of technical products. A first result indicated that existing methodologies do not sufficiently meet the specific requirements of said area of analysis due to a lack in focusing cross-company collaboration. The analysis of existing notations and methods as crucial elements for formulating and formalizing real-life circumstances exhibited shortcomings with regard to modeling cross-company collaboration processes, as it is not possible to map all collaboration relevant items. The overall aim of the thesis was to develop a methodology that provides methodically consistent, transparent and plausible means to be able to use information systems for cross-company collaboration in sales and distribution departments for technical products. Therefore, the following objectives were defined: - set out and analyze all levels of cross-company collaboration, - support formalizable, automatizable and little structured, manually executable processes in sales and distribution of technical products by means of information systems, - simplify the selection of suitable sub-processes and system modules, - integrate the modules in existing system environments and scenarios. The methodology is characterized by a new perspective on cross-company processes. To describe the relevant entities and their mutual relations, the methodology includes a meta-model comprising the strategy level, the process level and the system level. They and are put into a process oriented order together with the four phases analysis, conceptualization, implementation and launch. Based on the condition that collaboration always requires communication between at least two partners, the thesis introduces zEPK (cooperation oriented extended process chains) and the communicative perspective derived from those zEPK as crucial links between processes, information systems and corporate objectives. To ensure that the relevant communication levels are taken into consideration, a communicating partner can be both a human being and an information system. The communicative perspective is described by the relations of communicative acts, which are assigned to cross-company process activities. A communicative act instantiates one of the six communication classes, which are determined by the two discriminators synchronicity and communication level. Additionally, a collaboration vector is developed, representing different dimensions of the collaboration relation, such as formalizability, spatial position or public availability, over attribute value set. In order to ensure generic applicability of the methodology, comprehensive classes of processes and system modules are also developed. As part of the phases of the methodology, business processes for cross-company purposes are modeled into zEPK and the newly generated communicative perspective and designed for the desired state. The aggregated requirements of the desired processes are recorded in a profile and serve for a formalized and plausible selection of target scenarios. The reference architectures of the target scenarios constitute the basis for the conceptualization and implementation of the system. By means of two mutually influencing assignment algorithms, possible system modules for the individual processes are formally selected and prioritized according to their weighting with regard to supporting corporate objectives and economic potentials. The conceptualization of the system can have several levels for an iterative implementation. In order to test the applicability of the methodology, three scenarios were set up in the areas: cleanroom technology, automation technology and hand-operated electrical tools. The scenarios showed that the methodology is adequate to select, conceptualize implement and introduce suitable information systems for marketing technical products. It could be shown that enterprise portals, being a comprehensive framework for mapping processes and integrating the necessary modules, are particularly suited for cross-company business execution. The results yielded by the methodology can be classified as comprehensible and plausible, making necessary decisions more transparent than this is possible with conventional methods and models and facilitating the selection, conceptualization, implementation and introduction of information systems.
