It was the aim of this thesis to make use of the pore architecture of small-pore zeolite molecular sieves to improve selectivities in catalytic conversions of hydrocarbons. For that purpose, two test systems were identified, on the one hand the acid-catalyzed cracking of n-alkanes on 8-ring zeolites in their Brønsted-acid form, on the other hand the synthesis of ruthenium- and gold-modified small-pore zeolites and the screening of these materials as catalysts in selective oxidation reactions with molecular oxygen as the oxidizing agent. In the first part of this Ph.D. project, n-alkane cracking on a variety of 8-ring zeolites was studied. The catalytic properties of 12-, 10- and 8-ring zeolites with similar framework aluminum contents, crystal sizes and ammonium ion exchange degrees were compared in n-octane cracking. This clearly revealed that with decreasing pore dimensions the relative importance of monomolecular cracking is strongly increasing as compared to that of bimolecular cracking. Thus, higher selectivities to C1-C3 products, lower selectivities to C4-C6 hydrocarbons, much more olefins than paraffins and only very small amounts of branched products were observed on small-pore zeolite catalysts. All small-pore zeolites showed high relative contributions of monomolecular Haag-Dessau cracking, i. e., high selectivities to C1-C3 products and low selectivities to branched hydrocarbons. The main product in catalytic cracking of n-octane on all small-pore zeolites was propene. The maximum propene selectivity was achieved on zeolite H,K,Na-chabasite (CHA) with about 40 %. Thus, 8-ring zeolites have the potential to increase the selectivities to ethene, propene and butenes in catalytic cracking of n-alkanes. However, in comparison to common zeolitic FCC catalyst components like H-ZSM-5 (MFI) and H-USY (FAU) their activities are much smaller. The second part of this thesis deals with the synthesis of ruthenium- and gold-containing zeolites, their physico-chemical characterization and testing of these materials in selective oxidation reactions with molecular oxygen as the oxidizing agent. Adding ruthenium chloride to the gel of a template-free zeolite synthesis led to hydrous ruthenium oxide particles. The majority of these particles had a diameter between 0.5 and 0.9 nm. Larger anhydrous RuO2 species were obtained by ion exchange in aqueous suspension or from a tetrapropylammonium (TPA+)-templated zeolite synthesis with subsequent calcination. In addition, the competetitive hydrogenation of 1-hexene and 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene was applied as an analytical tool to discriminate between ruthenium oxide clusters on the outer crystal surface and inside the zeolite pores. Zeolite 1.2Ru/Na-ZSM-5-tf (MFI) prepared by adding ruthenium chloride to a template-free hydrothermal synthesis was highly selective for the conversion of 1-hexene. This indicates that the active hydrous ruthenium oxide particles on the zeolites were almost exclusively located inside the pores (as confirmed by HRTEM) and were, thus, available for shape-selective catalytic conversions. The addition of ruthenium chloride to the gel of the hydrothermal synthesis in the absence of organic templates was found to a be an efficient method for introducing ruthenium species not only into large- and medium-pore zeolites, but also into small-pore zeolites with various structure types like KFI, LTA, MER and RHO. A large variety of ruthenium- and gold-containing zeolites was tested as catalysts both in the gas-phase and in the liquid-phase oxidation of n-octane with molecular oxygen as the oxidizing agent. So far, no significant improvement of the selectivities to partial oxidation products was observed in comparison to experiments without a catalyst. The ruthenium-containing zeolites were, however, active and selective catalysts for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols. Upon increasing the ruthenium content of the zeolites Ru/Ca,Na-A (LTA), the 1-octanol conversion was steadily increasing. However, as soon as the ruthenium species were not located within the zeolite pores any more, the 1-octanol conversion dropped to values, that could be obtained with much smaller ruthenium contents when the metal particles were present inside the zeolite pores. In conclusion, the application of small-pore zeolites as catalysts is limited to molecules that are small enough to diffuse through the pore windows. However, small-pore zeolites are active and selective catalysts for different reactions. This was demonstrated not only for the catalytic cracking of n-octane on 8-ring zeolites in their Brønsted-acid form, but also for experiments of competitive hydrogenation, which were used as a characterization tool to determine the position of ruthenium and gold clusters on medium- and small-pore zeolites semi-quantitatively. Besides, the activity of intrazeolitic ruthenium (oxide) clusters for the aerobic oxidation of 1-octanol was demonstrated.
