The ongoing pervasion of the value creation chain by information technology permits the combination of the principles of mass production and individualised production in the concept of customised production (CP). CP is a hybrid strategy of production, which is settled between the alternatives of cost leadership and differentiation. It allows products, which are very close to the individual needs and demands of the customer at only moderate additional costs. All samples of customised products are different in some defined features, shape or functionalities and build upon varying order specifications. Hereby, in-formation concerning the varying parts of the order specifications is essential to the workers at the shop floor. Since this information is needed for every sample of the prod-uct, it is also of high usage. Production activities regarding the customised parts of the products are relying on this information the same way they use materials. Both kinds of resources are essential, without their availability orders cannot be fulfilled and the cus-tomised product samples cannot be built. The provision of information for CP has to be designed carefully and strongly oriented on the exact demand for information of every workstation. Provision of generalised, overburdened information as it is provided by standardised information systems, for example ERP applications, is not sufficient. It is designed to be of universal usage according to an unspecific demand for information. In a customised production provision and inspection of generalised information results in considerable additional efforts by the workers. The objective of this thesis is the efficient provision of information for workers in CP. A corresponding offer of nformation has to be reduced to the core of absolute necessary, essential information demands regarding the customised order specifications. It has to be clearly arranged, recognisable at a glance, free of all unnecessary pieces of information and has to avoid time consuming activities for navigation and interaction. Obviously it has to be individually designed for every workstation. Furthermore it has to account for varying levels of information for the workers. Therefore an efficient provision of information at CP has to be tailored for every workstation and personalised to the workers. Webportals are a suitable instrument for user oriented, personalised and tailored provision of in-formation. However for provision of order information at the shop floor they are rarely used. Therefore it lacks of experience and expertise regarding the systematic design and realisation of webportals for the shop floor level. A supporting method is needed, which has to consider problem oriented concepts as well as their implementation in a portal based on web technology. To solve the deficiency, a method was developed which utilises a new pattern language for shop floor related information portals. The language comprises a comprehensive over-view of the typical design steps and tasks for information portals. It offers more than 200 design patterns to solve the design tasks, clarifies dependencies and co-operation between the patterns and ties them together in sequences. Therefore, it allows a systematic, target oriented selection. The emphasis is placed on concepts for user centered provision of information which is intuitive and easy to use and also flexible and adaptable to the individual demands of the workers. Pages of a portal which are designed and derived from the new pattern language are representing sequences of patterns. These sequences of patterns can be reused to design similar information offers and portal pages. They contribute to the harmonisation of portals, especially in terms of consistent and therefore usable user interfaces. Thorough utilisation of the pattern language is the enabler for shop floor related information portals with a lean, user oriented, personalised and tailored provision of information. The exalted requirements for an efficient provision of information in a customised production can thus be fulfilled. The significant benefit to justify this thorough and elabo-rate designed provision of information is shown by numerous case studies of customised production with its high usage rate of information.
