Synthesis and characterization of novel V‐type hexaferrite BaFe9-xSnxO15
(2025) Dreer, Yanina Mariella; Frank, Alexandra Elisa; Niewa, Rainer
A novel V‐type hexaferrite with the composition BaFe9-xSnxO15 with 1.57  ≤  x  ≤ 1.84 (from wavelength dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy [WDX] data) is synthesized by reacting BaCO3, Fe2O3, SnO2, and Na2CO3 as flux in a platinum crucible at 1300 °C. The obtained product consists mostly of black, plate‐like crystals. Optimization of the synthesis allows to grow both single crystals and microcrystalline samples. Analysis of the crystal structure shows that the octahedrally coordinated Fe(2), Fe(3), and Fe(6) sites are the preferred positions for mixed occupation with tin. Phase analysis via powder X‐ray diffractometry and Rietveld refinement reveals that the V‐type ferrite forms the main phase with a share of ≈68.6%, next to M‐type and R‐type ferrites and minor residues of reactants. WDX confirms the composition of BaFe9-xSnxO15 with x > 1 and indicates that vacancies are formed on the transition metal sites to achieve charge balance. Combination of results from single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction data and WDX reveals that due to similar block sequences, different types of hexaferrites can grow on top of each other.
