    When added to S. aureus cultures in subbactericidal concentrations, peracetic acid induced the formation of intracytoplasmic membrane structures associated with respiration. These structures and the cytoplasmic membrane were completely destroyed by bactericidal concentrations of peracetic acid. In bacericidal concentrations, peracetic acid disrupted the osmiophilic inclusions contg. oxidn.-redn. enzymes in E. coli cells. Oxygen formed during the decomposition of peracetic acid apparently penetrates into the bacterial cells without damaging the cell walls and causes death by disrupting respiration.
