Item Open Access Adaptive frameless raycasting for interactive volume visualization(2014) Weißer, ConstantinThere have been many successful attempts to improve ray casting and ray tracing performance in the last decades. Many of these improvements form important steps towards high-performance interactive visualisation. However, growing challenges keep pace with enhancements: display resolutions skyrocket with modern technology and applications become more and more sophisticated. With the limits of Moore's law moving into sight, there have been many considerations about speeding up well-known algorithms, including a plenitude of publications on frameless rendering. In frameless renderers sampling is not synchronised with display refreshes. That allows for both spatially and temporally varying sample rates. One basic approach simply randomises samples entirely. This increases liveliness and reduces input delay, but also leads to distorted and blurred images during movements. Dayal et al. tackle this problem by focusing samples on complex regions and by applying approximating filters to reconstruct an image from incoherent buffer content. Their frameless ray tracer vastly reduces latency and yet produces outstanding image quality. In this thesis we transfer the concepts to volume ray casting. Volume data often poses different challenges due to its lack of plains and surfaces, and its fine granularity. We experiment with both Dayal's sampling and reconstruction techniques and examine their applicability on volume data. In particular, we examine whether their adaptive sampler performs as well on volume data and which adaptions might be necessary. Further, we develop another reconstruction filter which is designed to remove artefacts that frequently occur in our frameless renderer. Instead of assuming certain properties due to local sampling rates and colour gradients, our filter detects artefacts by their age signature in the buffer. Our filter seems to be more targeted and yet requires only constant time per pixel.Item Open Access STEP/XML based macro data representation for parametric CAD model exchange(2014) Zoabi, FirasThere is tremendous need in collaborative design today for the integration of heterogeneous CAx systems. This general practice has serious shortcomings like design discontinuity, limited parallelisation, loss of information, and conversion errors. To overcome these shortcomings, macro-parametric approach (MPA), which is a history-based method of parametric CAD model exchange, has been proposed. The macro-parametric approach is a way to achieve compatible CAD model exchange amongst a variety of mutually incompatible CAD systems. CAD models can be exchanged in the form of a macro file that comprises a sequence of modeling commands. A standard macro file that contains a set of event-driven commands can transfer the designer intent such as parameters, features and constraints. Currently, STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product model data) as an international standard (ISO-10303, Industrial automation systems and integration - Product data representation and exchange) for the computer-interpretable representation and the exchange of product model data is widely used. STEP is becoming the 'lingua franca' in the area of modelling and exchanging product data. One remaining problem of the using STEP as a neutral format is that it does not retain parametric information such as the designer intent but only the pure boundary representation (B-rep) of the CAD model. The B-rep model without parametric information presents difficulties for engineering changes and it may also lead to an unexpected distortion of shape. This research aims to investigate an exchange method that uses STEP/XML (extensible mark-up) technology to express a set of standard modeling commands extracted from CAD models created by Autodesk InventorTM, to enable the same CAD models are readable and shareable with other CAD application systems.Item Open Access Test planning for low-power built-in self test(2014) Zoellin, Christian G.; Wunderlich, Hans-Joachim (Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil.)Power consumption has become the most important issue in the design of integrated circuits. The power consumption during manufacturing or in-system test of a circuit can significantly exceed the power consumption during functional operation. The excessive power can lead to false test fails or can result in the permanent degradation or destruction of the device under test. Both effects can significantly impact the cost of manufacturing integrated circuits. This work targets power consumption during Built-In Self-Test (BIST). BIST is a Design-for-Test (DfT) technique that adds additional circuitry to a design such that it can be tested at-speed with very little external stimulus. Test planning is the process of computing configurations of the BIST-based tests that optimize the power consumption within the constraints of test time and fault coverage. In this work, a test planning approach is presented that targets the Self-Test Using Multiple-input signature register and Parallel Shift-register sequence generator (STUMPS) DfT architecture. For this purpose, the STUMPS architecture is extended by clock gating in order to leverage the benefits of test planning. The clock of every chain of scan flip-flops can be independently disabled, reducing the switching activity of the flip-flops and their clock distribution to zero as well as reducing the switching activity of the down-stream logic. Further improvements are obtained by clustering the flip-flops of the circuit appropriately. The test planning problem is mapped to a set covering problem. The constraints for the set covering are extracted from fault simulation and the circuit structure such that any valid cover will test every targeted fault at least once. Divide-and-conquer is employed to reduce the computational complexity of optimization against a power consumption metric. The approach can be combined with any fault model and in this work, stuck-at and transition faults are considered. The approach effectively reduces the test power without increasing the test time or reducing the fault coverage. It has proven effective with academic benchmark circuits, several industrial benchmarks and the Synergistic Processing Element (SPE) of the Cell/B.E.™ Processor (Riley et al., 2005). Hardware experiments have been conducted based on the manufacturing BIST of the Cell/B.E.™ Processor and shown the viability of the approach for industrial, high-volume, high-end designs. In order to improve the fault coverage for delay faults, high-frequency circuits are sometimes tested with complex clock sequences that generate test with three or more at-speed cycles (rather than just two of traditional at-speed testing). In order to allow such complex clock sequences to be supported, the test planning presented here has been extended by a circuit graph based approach for determining equivalent combinational circuits for the sequential logic. In addition, this work proposes a method based on dynamic frequency scaling of the shift clock that utilizes a given power envelope to it full extent. This way, the test time can be reduced significantly, in particular if high test coverage is targeted. Item Open Access Extending parking assistance for automative user interfaces(2014) Georoceanu, RaduNowadays the trend in the automotive industry is to integrate systems that go beyond the scope of just maneuvering the car. Navigation, communication, and entertainment functions have become usual in most cars. The multitude of sensors present in vehicles today can be used to collect information that can be shared with other drivers in order to make the roads safer and cleaner. A more troubling issue that affects drivers is the search for free parking spots, because of the time waste, fuel consumtion and effort. There are already solutions available that try to help drivers diminish these problems, like crowdsourcing smartphone apps, but they are still far away from being a reliable solution. The overall goal of this thesis is to find new ways of providing parking information to drivers. This information is collected from vehicles which are equipped with latest sensoric hardware capable of detecting parking spaces while driving and distribute these information to the cloud, sharing it with other drivers using smartphones or vehicle's integrated displays. Though the idea is simple, there are many challanges that need to be addressed. The thesis will also look into ways of improving parking surveillance for vehicles to make them less susceptible to vandalism and thefts, by using latest vehicle-integrated video camera systems. A study will be made to see what information drivers want to have related to parking and how this information can be displayed to them. Further, a cloud based-implementation of such a system will be presented in detail and an evaluation will be made to see how the system behaves in the real world.Item Open Access REST compliant clients for REST APIs(2014) Jaber, MustafaIn today's distributed systems, REST services play a centric role in defining applications' architecture. Current technologies and literature focus on building server-side REST applications. But they fail to build generic and REST compliant client solutions. Therefore, most offered services and especially client applications rarely comply to the constraints that constitute the REST architecture. In this thesis, the architecture of a new generic framework for building REST compliant client applications is introduced. In addition, a new description language that conforms to REST's constraints and helps reduce development time is presented. We describe in this work the building-blocks of the proposed solutions and show a software implementation of a library that leverages the solutions' architectures. Using the proposed framework and description language, client applications that conform to the full set of REST's constraints can be built in an easy and optimized way. In addition, REST service providers can rely on the proposed description language to eliminate the complexity of repetitively building customized solutions for different technologies or platforms.
