    A method for evaluating population and infrastructure exposed to natural hazards : tests and results for two recent Tonga tsunamis

    Background: Coastal communities are highly exposed to ocean- and -related hazards but often lack an accurate population and infrastructure database. On January 15, 2022 and for many days thereafter, the Kingdom of Tonga was cut off from the rest of the world by a destructive tsunami associated with the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption. This situation was made worse by COVID-19-related lockdowns and no precise idea of the magnitude and pattern of destruction incurred, confirming Tonga’s position as second out of 172 countries ranked by the World Risk Index 2018. The occurrence of such events in remote island communities highlights the need for (1) precisely knowing the distribution of buildings, and (2) evaluating what proportion of those would be vulnerable to a tsunami.
    Methods and Results: A GIS-based dasymetric mapping method, previously tested in New Caledonia for assessing and calibrating population distribution at high resolution, is improved and implemented in less than a day to jointly map population clusters and critical elevation contours based on runup scenarios, and is tested against destruction patterns independently recorded in Tonga after the two recent tsunamis of 2009 and 2022. Results show that ~ 62% of the population of Tonga lives in well-defined clusters between sea level and the 15 m elevation contour. The patterns of vulnerability thus obtained for each island of the archipelago allow exposure and potential for cumulative damage to be ranked as a function of tsunami magnitude and source area.
    Conclusions: By relying on low-cost tools and incomplete datasets for rapid implementation in the context of natural disasters, this approach works for all types of natural hazards, is easily transferable to other insular settings, can assist in guiding emergency rescue targets, and can help to elaborate future land-use planning priorities for disaster risk reduction purposes.

    The monitoring and modeling of riverine floods have been covered extensively in the scientific literature with a substantial number of scientific contributions related to calibration/validation of hydraulic and hydrological models and assimilation of Earth Observation (EO) data into them. These models, when used for flood forecasting purposes, rely heavily on ground-based hydrological networks along with numerical weather models which, particularly in data-scarce regions, are often challenged by data sparsity. In these situations, EO data offer a viable solution to enhance the skill of these flood forecasting systems by providing global-scale observations of key hydrological variables such as precipitation, soil moisture, river discharge, water levels, and flood extent. This manuscript reviews and discusses the capability of these EO data in enhancing flood forecasting systems, by analyzing their accuracy, lead time, and reliability, while at the same time highlighting key challenges such as data latency, spatial–temporal resolution trade-offs, and model assimilation constraints. By leveraging recent advancements in remote sensing, data assimilation techniques, and artificial intelligence, EO-based flood forecasting has the potential to bridge existing observational gaps, particularly in vulnerable regions. The paper also outlines future research directions and technological developments needed to maximize the impact of satellite data in operational flood forecasting systems.

    Numerical study on the aerodynamic characteristics of the NACA 0018 airfoil at low Reynolds number for Darrieus wind turbines using the Transition SST model

    A symmetrical NACA 0018 airfoil is often used in such applications as small-to-medium scale vertical-axis wind turbines and aerial vehicles. A review of the literature indicates a large gap in experimental studies of this airfoil at low and moderate Reynolds numbers in the previous century. This gap has limited the potential development of classical turbulence models, which in this range of Reynolds numbers predict the lift coefficients with insufficiently accurate results in comparison to contemporary experimental studies. Therefore, this paper validates the aerodynamic performance of the NACA 0018 airfoil and the characteristics of the laminar separation bubble formed on its suction side using the standard uncalibrated four-equation Transition SST turbulence model and the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. A numerical study was conducted for the chord Reynolds number of 160,000, angles of attack between 0 and 11 degrees, as well as for the free-stream turbulence intensity of 0.05%. The calculated lift and drag coefficients, aerodynamic derivatives, as well as the location and length of the laminar bubble quite well agree with the results of experimental measurements taken from the literature for validation. A sensitivity study of the numerical model was performed in this paper to examine the effects of the time-step size, geometrical parameters and mesh distribution around the airfoil on the simulation results. The airfoil data sets obtained in this work using the Transition SST and the k-ω SST turbulence models were used in the improved double multiple streamtube (IDMS) to calculate aerodynamic blade loads of a vertical-axis wind turbine. The characteristics of the normal component of the aerodynamic blade load obtained by the Transition SST approach are much better suited to the experimental data compared to the k-ω SST turbulence model.

    A new magnetic anomaly map for Greenland based on a combination of equivalent source modeling and spherical harmonic expansion

    The Greenland Magnetic Map (GREENMAG) is a new compilation of magnetic anomaly data that covers the inland ice, ice-free coastal areas, and adjacent shelf regions of Greenland ( 10.22008/FK2/LQN5YJ , Heincke and Szwillus, 2025). GREENMAG is based on all accessible modern regional aeromagnetic surveys from Greenland and vintage datasets without GPS positioning in areas where modern data are lacking. The magnetic anomaly map is generated by a combination of equivalent source (ES) modeling and spherical harmonic expansion. Hereby, the data points are used at their actual measurement location as input data for the inversion of the ES modeling. The equivalent sources are represented by magnetic dipoles that are arranged in three uniform grids with different source spacing and depths (coarsest spacing: 10 ×10 km; medium spacing: 2 ×2 km; finest spacing: 0.7 ×0.7 km). Regularization in the inversion for the different equivalent source grids are chosen such that the resulting resolution is adapted to the largely varying magnetic data coverage in Greenland. Since long wavelength components in aeromagnetic data are considered unreliable, they are replaced by the LCS-1 satellite model based on magnetic gradient measurements of the Swarm and CHAMP missions. For merging, the responses from the individual equivalent dipole sources are transferred to spherical harmonics and replaced for degree n=13-133 by the Gaussian coefficients of the LCS-1 model. The final magnetic anomaly map is calculated from the combined model at a constant height of 2000 m a.s.l. (WGS84) and with a grid spacing of 400 ×400 m. The comparison between the GREENMAG and the earlier compilation from the Circum-Arctic Mapping Project (CAMP-M) highlights the enhanced level of detail now available across many regions of Greenland.

    Optimal heliocentric orbit raising of CubeSats with a monopropellant electrospray multimode propulsion system

    A Multimode Propulsion System (MPS) is an innovative spacecraft thruster concept that integrates two or more propulsion modes sharing the same type of propellant. A spacecraft equipped with an MPS can potentially combine the advantages of continuous-thrust electric propulsion and medium-to-high-thrust chemical propulsion within a single vehicle, while reducing the overall mass compared to traditional configurations where each propulsion system uses a different propellant. This feature makes the MPS concept particularly attractive for small spacecraft, such as the well-known CubeSats, which have now reached a high level of technological maturity and are employed not only in geocentric environments but also in interplanetary missions as support elements for conventional deep-space vehicles. Within the MPS framework, a Monopropellant-Electrospray Multimode Propulsion System (MEMPS) represents a specific type of micropropulsion technology that enables a single miniaturized propulsion unit to operate in either catalytic-chemical or electrospray-electric mode. This paper investigates the flight performance of a MEMPS-equipped CubeSat in a classical circle-to-circle orbit-raising (or lowering) maneuver within a two-dimensional mission scenario. Specifically, the study derives the optimal guidance law that allows the CubeSat to follow a transfer trajectory optimized either for minimum flight time or minimum propellant consumption, starting from a parking orbit of assigned radius and targeting a final circular orbit. Numerical simulations indicate that a heliocentric orbit raising, increasing the initial solar distance by 20%, can be achieved with a flight time of approximately 11 months and a propellant consumption slightly below 6 kg. The proposed method is applied to a heliocentric case study, although the procedure can be readily extended to geocentric transfer missions, which represent a more common application scenario for current CubeSat-based scientific missions.

    Simulating asteroid impacts and meteor events by high-power lasers : from the laboratory to spaceborne missions

    Meteor plasmas and impact events are complex, dynamic natural phenomena. Simulating these processes in the laboratory is, however, a challenge. The technique of laser induced dielectric breakdown was first used for this purpose almost 50 years ago. Since then, laser-based experiments have helped to simulate high energy processes in the Tunguska and Chicxulub impact events, heavy bombardment on the early Earth, prebiotic chemical evolution, space weathering of celestial bodies and meteor plasma. This review summarizes the current level of knowledge and outlines possible paths of future development.

    Technology selection for holistic analysis of hybrid-electric commuter aircraft

    Electric powertrains have different characteristics than conventional powertrains with combustion engines and require unconventional aircraft designs to evolve their full potential. Therefore, this paper describes a method to identify potential aircraft designs with electrified powertrains. Promising technology options in the fields of powertrain architecture, aerodynamic interactions, onboard systems and operating strategies were collected by the project partners of the LuFo project GNOSIS. The effect of the technology options on a commuter aircraft was evaluated in terms of global emissions ( CO2), local emissions ( NOXand noise) and operating costs. The evaluation considers an entry into service in 2025 and 2050 and is based on the reference aircraft Beechcraft 1900D. Literature review and simplified calculations enabled the evaluation of the aerodynamic interactions, systems and operating strategies. A preliminary aircraft design tool assessed the different powertrain architectures by introducing the two parameters ’power hybridization’ and ’power split’. Afterwards, compatible technology options were compiled into technology baskets and ranked using the shortest euclidean distance to the ideal solution and the farthest euclidean distance to the worst solution (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method). An analysis of the CS 23 regulations leads to a high-wing design and excluded the partial turbo-electric powertrain architecture with the gas turbine in the aircraft tail. For 2025, a partial turbo-electric powertrain with two additional electric driven wingtip propellers was selected. A serial hybrid powertrain, which uses a gas turbine or fuel cell in combination with a battery, powers distributed electric propulsors at the wing leading edge in 2050. In both scenarios, the aircraft design includes an electric environmental control system, an electric driven landing gear and electro-hydraulic actuators for the primary flight control and landing gear.

    An improved tree crown delineation method based on a gradient feature-driven expansion process using airborne LiDAR data

    Accurate individual tree crown delineation (ITCD), which can be used to estimate various forest parameters such as biomass, stem density, and carbon storage, stands as an essential component of precision forestry. Currently, raster data such as the canopy height model derived from airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data have been widely used in large-scale ITCD. However, the accuracy of current existing algorithms is limited due to the influence of understory vegetation and variations in tree crown geometry (e.g., the delineated crown boundaries consistently extend beyond their actual boundaries). In this study, we achieved more accurate crown delineation results based on an expansion process. First, the initial crown boundaries were extracted through watershed segmentation. Then, a “from the inside out” expansion process was guided by a novel gradient feature to obtain accurate crown delineation results across different forest conditions. Results show that our method produced much better performance (~75% matched on average) than other commonly used methods across all test forest plots. The erroneous situation of “match but over-grow” is significantly reduced, regardless of forest conditions. Compared to other methods, our method demonstrates a notable increase in the precisely matched rate across different plot types, with an average increase of 25% in broadleaf plots, 18% in coniferous plots, 23% in mixed plots, 15% in high-density plots, and 32% in medium-density plots, without increasing over- and under- segmentation errors. Our method demonstrates potential applicability across various forest conditions, facilitating future large-scale ITCD tasks and precision forestry applications.

    Modeling freezing and BioGeoChemical processes in Antarctic sea ice

    The Antarctic sea ice, which undergoes annual freezing and melting, plays a significant role in the global climate cycle. Since satellite observations in the Antarctic region began, 2023 saw a historically unprecedented decrease in the extent of sea ice. Further ocean warming and future environmental conditions in the Southern Ocean will influence the extent and amount of ice in the Marginal Ice Zones (MIZ), the BioGeoChemical (BGC) cycles, and their interconnected relationships. The so‐called pancake floes are a composition of a porous sea ice matrix with interstitial brine, nutrients, and biological communities inside the pores. The ice formation and salinity are both dependent on the ambient temperature. To realistically model these multiphasic and multicomponent coupled processes, the extended Theory of Porous Media (eTPM) is used to develop Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) based high‐fidelity models capable of simulating the different seasonal variations in the region. All critical variables like salinity, ice volume fraction, and temperature, among others, are considered and have their equations of state. The phase transition phenomenon is approached through a micro‐macro linking scheme. In this paper, a phase‐field solidification model [4] coupled with salinity is used to model the microscale freezing processes and up‐scaled to the macroscale eTPM model. The evolution equations for the phase field model are derived following Landau‐Ginzburg order parameter gradient dynamics and mass conservation of salt allowing to model the salt trapped inside the pores. A BGC flux model for sea ice is set up to simulate the algal species present in the sea ice matrix. Ordinary differential equations (ODE) are employed to represent the diverse environmental factors involved in the growth and loss of distinct BGC components. Processes like photosynthesis are dependent on temperature and salinity, which are derived through an ODE‐PDE coupling with the eTPM model. Academic simulations and results are presented as validation for the mathematical model. These high‐fidelity models eventually lead to their incorporation into large‐scale global climate models.
