Item Open Access Methodology for the systematic identification, evaluation, and management of operation-friendly energy flexibility in industrial systems(Stuttgart : Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung IPA, 2024) Tristán-Jiménez, Alejandro; Sauer, Alexander (Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Kfm.)This work proposes a methodology to systematically identify, evaluate and manage operation-friendly industrial energy flexibility measures. It is structured in three consecutive phases. In the first phase, the available industrial systems, their relevant features, and their energy consumption patterns are analysed to identify and characterise energy flexibility measures according to their functional, temporal, performance, and economic dimensions. The second phase evaluates each energy flexibility measure's technical and financial capacity to pursue relevant energy flexibility goals. The risks of implementing and utilising these measures are also assessed. In the third phase, energy flexibility measures are prioritised for implementation. Complementary, their utilization strategy is outlined by hierarchizing the energy flexibility goals to be pursued by the industrial facility. The results are summarized into a roadmap for industrial facilities to become energy flexible, enabling them to optimize their energy consumption hence becoming more competitive. Item Open Access Techno-economic analysis of hydrogen production from biomass with carbon capture and storage(Stuttgart : Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung IPA, 2024) Full, Johannes; Sauer, Alexander (Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Kfm.)In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it is inevitable to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to achieve climate-neutrality. Options for this purpose are negative emission technologies (NETs) that couple bioenergy production with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). In this paper, a novel technology concept for BECCS is introduced with the peculiarity that the energy carrier hydrogen is produced from biogenic sources: hydrogen bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (HyBECCS). For the HyBECCS concept, no possibilities for technology-specific assessment exist. However, standardized evaluation fundamentals are necessary to support potential users and investors in their entrepreneurial decision-making processes. They are of great importance with regard to the technical implementation of HyBECCS technologies. Additionally, political framework conditions and qualification systems for public subsidies could also be improved in a more targeted way. The solution developed in this doctoral thesis provides a methodological basis for techno-economic assessment of HyBECCS technologies. It includes uniform system boundaries for ecological and economic balancing and key performance indicators (KPIs). The KPIs can be applied to compare HyBECCS technologies with other hydrogen production technologies and NETs. In addition to conventional economic criteria, these indicators integrate macroeconomic effects resulting from the GHG emissions and reductions as a special feature. On the basis of an exemplary HyBECCS implementation project, a techno-economic analysis is carried out with the help of these KPIs. It is shown that the theoretical principles developed can be applied in practice.Item Open Access Influence of temperature and pressure on the wetting progress in 21700 lithium‐ion battery cells : experiment, model, and lattice Boltzmann simulation(2024) Wanner, Johannes; Burgard, Matthias; Othman, Nabih; Singh, Soumya; Birke, Kai PeterThe electrolyte filling and subsequent wetting of the active material is a time‐critical process in the manufacturing of lithium‐ion batteries. Due to the metallic cell housing, the process phenomena are insufficiently accessible, preventing the replication of the wetting processes by mathematical or simulative methods and hindering efforts to accelerate the wetting process. Therefore, this publication employs a glass cell housing for electrolyte filling of a 21700 cylindrical cell to investigate the wetting at different temperatures and process pressures. In parallel, a mathematical replication of the wetting, as well as a lattice Boltzmann pore‐scale simulation, is used to evaluate the influence of these varying process boundary conditions. The results show a strong temperature dependence on electrolyte wetting and the positive effect of pressure changes in the wetting process. These findings are particularly relevant to the process design of large‐scale cylindrical cell manufacturing.Item Open Access Decarbonization drivers and their impact on business models in the energy-intensive manufacturing industry (EIMI)(2024) Mais, Franziska; Bauernhansl, ThomasEIMIs face the challenge of adapting to the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal to achieve carbon neutrality. Driven by consumer interest in low-carbon products, regulatory requirements, and investor priorities, companies are pressured to integrate sustainability beyond short-term financial gains. The growing awareness of the environmental impact of business models (BM) has fueled the development of Sustainable Business Models (SBMs). Although the importance of decarbonization of EIMIs has increased, there is a lack of industry-specific research examining the combination of decarbonization and business models, as well as their interrelationships and correlations. This study addresses the discussion on the role of SBMs in decarbonization, improving the understanding of how these drivers can be integrated to enable new BMs for EIMIs. Based on a structured literature review and semi-structured interviews within the EIMIs, the study identifies BM components influenced by these drivers requiring sustainable business model innovation (SBMI). Results show that decarbonization drivers significantly impact all BM components. Experts emphasize the importance of collaborative approaches and cooperation throughout the value chain. This research highlights the need for systematic analysis to understand how companies can manage decarbonization drivers effectively and suggests exploring potential SBM design options. Item Open Access Process model and life cycle assessment of biorefinery concept using agricultural and industrial residues for biohydrogen production(2024) Gamero, Edgar; Ruppert, Sophia; Miehe, Robert; Sauer, AlexanderSustainable waste management strategies are urgently needed due to an increasing global population and increased waste production. In this context, biorefineries have recently emerged as a promising approach to valorize waste streams and supply a broad range of products. This study presents the process model and life cycle assessment (LCA) of a biorefinery concept using a novel biochemical method, a so-called “dark photosynthesis” conversion. This process is coupled to a photo-fermentation using microalgae. Overall, the biorefinery concept can produce hydrogen, lutein, β-carotene, and proteins for animal feed. Apple pomace from apple juice production is used as feedstock for the primary conversion step. A process model was created with the process simulation software Aspen Plus ® using experimental and literature data. Results from this model were then used in an LCA. The environmental impacts of the proposed biorefinery concept are relatively high, showing the need for process optimization in several areas. Energy system integration, stream recycling, and higher hydrogen yields are recognized as especially important for improving the environmental performance of this concept. Despite these findings, the model shows the feasibility of implementing the biochemical conversion technologies in a biorefinery concept for effectively utilizing residue streams.Item Open Access Methodik für numerische Lackiersimulationen : Bedeutung der Modell- und Eingangsparameter bei der Hochrotationszerstäubung(Stuttgart : Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung IPA, 2024) Güttler, Nico; Bauernhansl, Thomas (Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing.)Item Open Access Enzyme-assisted circular additive manufacturing as an enabling technology for a circular bioeconomy : a conceptual review(2024) Protte-Freitag, Kristin; Gotzig, Sophia; Rothe, Hannah; Schwarz, Oliver; Silber, Nadine; Miehe, RobertAdditive manufacturing (AM) is a decisive element in the sustainable transformation of technologies. And yet its inherent potential has not been fully utilized. In particular, the use of biological materials represents a comparatively new dimension that is still in the early stages of deployment. In order to be considered sustainable and contribute to the circular economy, various challenges need to be overcome. Here, the literature focusing on sustainable, circular approaches is reviewed. It appears that existing processes are not yet capable of being used as circular economy technologies as they are neither able to process residual and waste materials, nor are the produced products easily biodegradable. Enzymatic approaches, however, appear promising. Based on this, a novel concept called enzyme-assisted circular additive manufacturing was developed. Various process combinations using enzymes along the process chain, starting with the preparation of side streams, through the functionalization of biopolymers to the actual printing process and post-processing, are outlined. Future aspects are discussed, stressing the necessity for AM processes to minimize or avoid the use of chemicals such as solvents or binding agents, the need to save energy through lower process temperatures and thereby reduce CO2 consumption, and the necessity for complete biodegradability of the materials used.
