Dislocation activities, interface mediated plasticity, and macroscopic yielding are quite different from those in unconstrained metals. The role of interfaces for the material properties and for the governing deformation mechanisms remains unclear despite the large efforts made in experimental and theoretical investigations. Here we approach the effect of geometrical confinement on the atomic and on the mesoscopic scale. We elucidate size effects on failure mechanisms and on scale dependent plasticity of nanostructured dual phase composite materials with the aid of computer simulations. Cleavage failure of dual phase layered materials is simulated with a mesoscopic model to clarify the scaling behavior of the materials fracture toughness. The model accounts for the confinement effect that a layer geometry imposes on the collective dislocation behaviour near a moving crack tip. The critical layer thickness at which the bulk fracture toughness of the elastic-plastic material is reached as well as the bulk fracture toughness itself increase with the cohesive strength of the interface, but become smaller for higher yield strengths. The main conclusion drawn in this work is that fracture toughness as a function of layer thickness saturates gradually if dislocation activity is dispersed, dilute and not compact around the crack tip. It increases abruptly with the thickness when dislocation activity right at the crack tip is possible and a compact, shielding dislocation array forms near the crack tip. Furthermore this work provides preliminary understanding of the governing mechanisms that control the limiting length scale for the strengthening of bioinspired metallic nanocomposits. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of a bioinspired metallic nanocomposite which consists of hard nanosized Ni platelets embedded in a soft Al matrix. The simulation results are analyzed with respect to the prevailing deformation mechanisms quantifying the contribution of dislocation-based plasticity and interface-mediated interfacial slip as a function of the nanostructural scaling. The results of the simulations show that interfacial sliding contributes significantly to the plastic deformation despite a strong bonding across the interface. Critical for the strength of the nanocomposite is the geometric confinement of dislocation processes in the plastic phase. The confinement effect strongly depends on the length scale and the morphology of the metallic nanostructure. The main conclusion drawn for this material is that below a critical length scale, the softening caused by interfacial sliding prevails, giving rise to a maximum strength at the optimum size. The gas phase reactions governing the first steps in the combustion process are well understood. The existing models describing the growth of soot particles and the formation of soot aggregates are widely accepted, as well. However, the so-called inception, i.e. the mechanism leading to the formation of the first solid particles from gas phase molecules, is still a controversial issue. This is mainly due to the lack of adequate experimental techniques capable of detecting particles in the low nanometer range like those created in the nucleation process in flames. At present most of the combustion models stress the importance of PAH formation and growth in the soot formation process. Other models, however, propose a soot formation mechanism based on the formation of large three dimensional structures without crystallinity. In the present work, the detection and characterization of soot precursor particles, as transition species between gas phase molecules and solid soot particles in the combustion process, is attempted by means of mass spectrometry. To this end a ”custom-built” reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer of high sensitivity and with a large mass range is used. Measurements are carried out in different premixed ethylene laboratory flames at different pressures and in a wide range of stoichiometries. Additionally, the exhaust of a gasoline and a diesel engine is investigated. These measurements require the development of a sampling technique capable of transporting the sample from atmospheric conditions to the high vacuum of the mass spectrometer. The resulting fast pulsed sampling system minimizes undesirable sampling line effects while it enables the generation of an optimized molecular beam. Photo ionization of the sample is provided by an excimer laser. The main findings of this work can be summarized as follows: 1. Different types of soot precursor particles can coexist in the flame. For the first time two different types of soot precursor particles with diameters ranging from approximately 1 to 5 nm have been simultaneously detected. The different soot precursor particle modes, in the following referred to as mode A and mode B, show different features. Thus, the existence of at least two different types of soot precursor particles is postulated. Mode A particles are found in a wide range of flame stoichiometries. They are characterized by an ionization order close to two and show a fragmentation threshold of around 0.12 MW/cm2. These particles are considered amorphous, more characteristic of low temperature flames and associated to the soot precursor particles described by D’Alessio et al.. Mode B particles are only observed in a limited stoichiometric range associated with rather high flame temperatures. Mode B particles show an ionization order close to one and a relatively high fragmentation threshold close to 2.24 MW/cm2. These particles are considered to be similar to the ones described by Dobbins et al., i.e. stacks of planar PAHs. 2. Soot precursor particles, although considered to be very reactive, can survive the flame and be emitted. 3. Soot precursor particles are found in significant amounts only at flame stoichiometries above the soot threshold. The lower stoichiometric limit for particle generation is still an issue discussed in the combustion community. All results of this study indicate that the onset of particle formation takes place at flame stoichiometries close to the soot threshold. Consequently, the emission of soot precursor particles seems not to be an outstanding problem in the case of gasoline combustion engines, since the latter work under fairly stoichiometric burning conditions and are characterized by a homogeneous fuel-mixture. This is confirmed by the measurements carried out in the exhaust gas of a gasoline generator. Conventional diesel engines work under globally lean burning conditions but are characterized by a heterogeneous fuel-mixture. Consequently, high particle emissions are expected. The measurements carried out in the exhaust gas of a diesel generator, however, show negligible soot precursor particle emissions. In this case soot precursor particles are oxidized due to the excess of oxygen in the exhaust gas. Soot precursor particle losses due to coagulation with soot particles are also expected. This work demonstrates the utility of time-of-flight mass spectrometry for the detection and study of soot precursor particles. The experimental data presented in this thesis provide new information about the transition region between gas phase molecules and soot particles in the combustion process. This improves the understanding of the soot formation process and stimulates the revision of current combustion models.Item Open Access Two-phase flow processes with dynamic effects in porous media - parameter estimation and simulation(2006) Manthey, Sabine; Helmig, Rainer (Prof. Dr.-Ing.)This study contributes to the understanding of dynamic effects in the capillary pressure-saturation relationship on the local scale and macroscale as well as giving an assessment as to when these effects might need to be taken into account for the evaluation of two-phase flow processes. In a general form, the rate-dependent Pc-Sw relationship as analysed here postulates that the difference between the non-wetting and wetting phase pressure minus the equilibrium capillary pressure is a linear function of the rate of change of saturation, introducing the factor of proportionality tau. This extended Pc-Sw relationship is examined in this study under three aspects. In order to identify flow regimes where dynamic effects might be of importance, a dimensional analysis of the two-phase balance equations being closed with the extended Pc-Sw relationship is carried out. In the dimensionless equations the well-known capillary and gravitational number, Ca and Gr, evolve. Moreover, the new dimensionless number Dy appears as a factor. Dy quantifies the ratio of the 'dynamic capillary force' to the viscous force. Relating Dy to Ca or Gr yields DyC, the ratio of the dynamic to the capillary equilibrium force, and DyG, the ratio of the dynamic capillary to the gravitational force. The influence of the dynamic capillary force decreases with increasing characteristic length scale in relation to the equilibrium capillary, viscous or gravitational force. Moreover, with increasing transient flow velocity, the dynamic capillary force gains in importance. A second part of this study deals with the determination of the coefficient tau on the basis of primary drainage laboratory experiments performed by GeoDelft, The Netherlands and numerical experiments. Using the laboratory experiments tau was calculated to vary between 11.0 kPas and 154.7 kPas depending on the water saturation. The coefficient increases with decreasing water saturation. For the determination of tau using numerical experiments first homogeneous domains were considered in order to test the averaging approach. The coefficient tau was found to scale proportionally to the porosity, the (saturation-weighted average) viscosity, and the squared averaging length, as well as inversely proportional to the intrinsic permeability. Parameters that describe the equilibrium Pc-Sw relationship have a minor influence on the coefficient tau. The dependence of tau on the averaging length poses a problem as its magnitude is thus not clearly bounded, making it impossible to define an REV. As a consequence, either the averaging length should relate to a bounded property or the averaging of the phase pressures as applied in this study has to be reconsidered. Moreover, two heterogeneous domains were studied, one being a simple pattern of two fine sand lenses in a coarse sand and the other a spatially-correlated random field. An influence resulting from the simple heterogeneity pattern on the coefficient is only noticeable in case the fine sand lenses are drained. The heterogeneity stemming from the spatially-correlated random field does not affect the magnitude of the coefficient. Finally, the impact on the numerical solution of the balance equations being closed with an extended Pc-Sw relationship is assessed with simulations of imbibition processes. The dimensionless numbers Dy and DyC can be consulted to assess the impact on the solution. The front width should be applied as the characteristic length scale. It is observed that for a dominance of the dynamic capillary over the viscous force, the rate of change of saturation is dampened and thus a retardation effect with respect to the cumulative mass occurs. Locally, accelerating and slowing down of the displacement can flatten a front in comparison to a reference case. Moreover, for a high influx of wetting phase a process reversal from imbibition to drainage and back occurred. If additionally the equilibrium capillary forces are diminished, oscillations in the solution might occur for a large viscosity ratio.Item Open Access Investigation of the dynamic system behaviour of pump cases(1993) Heisel, Uwe; Fiebig, WieslawHydraulic pumps convert mechanical power into hydraulic fluid power. During this process, alternating forces in hydraulic pumps incite vibrations in the pump case and are responsible for the structure-borne noise. Mainly dynamic forces in bearings are the source causing structure-borne noise which generates finally air-borne noise. For this reason, those dynamic forces have been investigated based on a dynamical model. The structure borne noise has been measured on the pump case surface. The natural vibrations of the pump case have been determined by the Finite Element Method for several boundary conditions. The comparison between calculated and measured natural vibrations indicates that the coupling of the pump parts influences the dynamic behaviour of the case.Item Open Access A combined distance and surface profile measurement system for industrial applications : a european project(1994) Docchio, Franco; Perini, Umberto; Tiziani, Hans J.The paper reports the design, development and characterization of an electrooptical equipment suitable for distance measurements and three-dimensional gauging of surfaces of industrial interest. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Item Open Access Post-processing tools for nonlinear fe analysis of concrete structures(1990) Cervenka, Vladimir; Pukl, Radomir; Eligehausen, RolfFinite clement analysis of the cracking process in concrete structures brings new requirements for the post-processing environment. Crack direction and location are important for identification of the failure mode. The problem have been solved in the finite element program SBETA which was developed by the authors for simulation of the failure processes in reinforced concrete structures. The post-processing system creates the graphical images of crack patterns. Graphical sequences for simulation can be generated. Wismuth, Z=83).
