River models for transport of matter and heat
    (1980) Kobus, Helmut; Grimm-Strele, Jost
Insufficient quality of water-supply may become the imiting factor for growth and development particularly in highly industrialized regions. A deterioration of water quality may result, aside from natural sources, from excessive municipal or industrial waste-water or cooling water discharges. Assessment of the environmental impact of such discharges requires adequate knowledge of the mixing and transport processes to which the introduced substances are subjected. Such phenomena are investigated in hydraulic models. A decisive distinction between mixing- and conventional models is the requirement to simulate turbulent transport processes correctly, which necessitates an exact reproduction of the local velocity distribution in the model. This results in more sophisticated requirements for model similarity. The main task of mixing models including intake- or outlet structures is usually the determination of the effluent concentration field in the water body, which is a prerequisite for the evaluation of possible negative consequences on the river ecology and on other water users located downstream. The model experiment gives answers to the question of how changes in the design of the outlet structure can influence the mixing pattern. Such questions are primarily important for large rivers and reservoirs, where incomplete mixing and stratification are likely to occur. For small rivers or creeks, the main problem is longitudinal dispersion, since cross-sectional mixing is quickly achieved because of the large ratio of effluent- to river flow rate. Similarly, the effect of very small waste-water discharges is easily evaluated as long as they do not produce a noticeable disturbance of the river flow.

Hydraulische Möglichkeiten zur Grundwassersanierung im Bereich von Altablagerungen
    (1983) Kobus, Helmut; Rinnert, Bernd

(1979) Kobus, Helmut; Naudascher, Eduard; Richter, Andreas; Westrich, Bernhard

    Relating hydraulics and ecological processes
(1991) Hjorth, Peder; Kobus, Helmut; Nachtnebel, Hans Peter; Nottage, Albert; Robarts, Richard
Any major modification of the hydraulic system results with some retardation in a response of the ecosystem trying to adapt to the new conditions. It is difficult to imagine situations where hydraulics and ecosystems are not related. Thus, harmonizing hydraulics with ecology means to identify alternative hydraulic measures which yield simultaneously economic benefits and improvement, preservation or at least a best fit of the environmental situation. Often, these objectives are subjected to an inherent conflict and therefore harmonizing is dependent on the preference structure of the modern society, which is inclined to sustainable development. The objective of this chapter is to develop a framework (methodology) which might assist in relating hydraulics and ecology with respect to specific goals under site and problem dependent constraints.

Versuchseinrichtung zur Grundwasser- und Altlastensanierung : Konzeption und Programmrahmen
(1993) Kobus, Helmut; Cirpka, Olaf; Barczewski, Baldur; Koschitzky, Hans-Peter

Hydraulics and design of spillway aerators for cavitation prevention in high speed flows
    (1988) Koschitzky, Hans-Peter; Kobus, Helmut
The controlling factors for spillway aeration are discussed in view of their relevance to the design of aerators. The air entrainment results from the interaction of the water flow and the air flow in the supply system. An empirical two dimensional air entrainment function for various aerator geometries is presented. The subatmospheric pressure distribution in the aerator is calculated by an iterative method. The combination of both yields the total air entrainment rate. The air entrainment leads to an increase of the water flow velocity.

Flow field and scouring effects of steady and pulsating jets impinging on a movable bed
(1979) Kobus, Helmut; Leister, Peter; Westrich, Bernhard
The flow field and erosion pattern of continuous and pulsating impinging jets has been studied experimentally. The mean velocity field as well as turbulent and pulsation components, wall pressure and wall shear stress distributions were investigated in an axisymmetric air jet impinging upon a rough wall. The results show how harmonic velocity pulsations at the nozzle affect both the mean and the turbulent flow field. Corresponding erosion tests with a vertical water jet impinging upon a uniform sand bed exhibited under certain conditions a greatly enhanced erosion rate. The increase in erosion capacity due to pulsation seems to be due to both the changes in the mean flow field and to the greatly increased lateral correlation of the velocity field in the impinging region.

Mass transport in an artificial heterogeneous aquifer : experiments and numerical modelling
    (1989) Schäfer, Gerhard; Kobus, Helmut
In order to generate a data base for the numerical study of dispersion processes in a well defined heterogeneous porous medium, a laboratory tank of 14 m in length, 0,5 m in height and 0.13 m in width has been constructed, which is composed of 81 different elements of exactly known geometry and hydraulic properties. In dispersion experiments using salt as tracer, breakthrough curves are observed at 80 points in 8 vertical sections. A comparison of three types of numerical models with the experimental data shows how well the models of various complexity describe the advection and dispersion processes and how in these cases the various dispersion parameters depend upon the models used.

    Das "PWAB-Testfeld Wasser und Boden"
    (1988) Kobus, Helmut

Evaluation of groundwater sampling techniques for the investigation and monitoring of contaminated sites
(1990) Teutsch, Georg; Barczewski, Baldur; Kobus, Helmut
The collection of representative groundwater samples is an essential prerequisite in hydrogeological site evaluation and groundwater monitoring. Erroneous or insufficent sampling may lead to wrong conclusions, possibly causing considerable health and/or financial risks, especially in respect to the assessment of contaminated sites. The collection of representative water samples therefore requires the use of appropriate sampling techniques, taking into account the prevailing aquifer conditions, the borehole hydraulics and the chemical parameters to be investigated. Consequently, the definition of the most suitable sampling equipment should be based on multiple criteria. In general these are the changing temperature and pressure conditions and the contact of the water with non-inert materials, which may affect the chemical integrity of the sample during the drilling of the well, the withdrawal and pumping of the water to the ground surface as well as the storage and transport to the laboratory. The major factors have to be investigated and quantified in order to minimize all undesired effects. In this paper the major influencing factors are discussed. Furthermore, an evaluation of various sampling techniques and sampling systems is presented. Special consideration is given to the ability of various systems to adequately sample groundwater with high organic loads. In the last section, some new sample system developments are briefly presented together with the expert system CASES, which was developed at the Stuttgart Institut für Wasserbau.
