Mapping varieties of farmers’ experience in the digital transformation : a new perspective on transformative dynamics
(2024) Knitsch, Valentin; Daniel, Lea; Welz, Juliane
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerabilities of the global food system, underscoring the need for a sustainable transformation of the food system. With the advent of new digital technologies emerging as critical tools for achieving the agricultural shift, it is important to understand farmers’ adoption decisions better. This study aims to systematically uncover and delineate the varied forms of experiences farmers have with new digital technologies and investigate how these experiences impact the organizational adoption decisions on the farm. In this study, twenty interviews with apple growers, wine makers, and intermediaries from a German region encompassing Saxony, Thuringia, and Saxony-Anhalt were conducted and analyzed. Through the lens of the modified adaptive capacity wheel and alongside the interview data, five relevant types of experiences were identified. These types of experiences are closely related to farmers’ adaptation motivation (AM) and adaptation belief (AB), potentially influencing their future decisions about the adoption of digital technologies. This study highlights the importance of creating meaningful experiences with technologies to strengthen farmers’ AM and AB.

Tackling grand challenges : insights and contributions from practice theories
(2025) Danner-Schröder, Anja; Mahringer, Christian A.; Sele, Kathrin; Jarzabkowski, Paula; Rouleau, Linda; Feldman, Martha S.; Pentland, Brian T.; Huysman, Marleen; Sergeeva, Anastasia V.; Gherardi, Silvia; Sutcliffe, Kathleen M.; Gehman, Joel
This curated debate discusses the value of practice theories in studying, understanding and tackling grand challenges. Practice theories assume that social phenomena are constituted through everyday doings and sayings. Building on this premise, the different contributions in this curated debate go beyond the assumption that grand challenges are abstract phenomena. The authors argue that grand challenges are enacted through mundane, situated actions that are often hidden in plain sight. Building on their research, they suggest that understanding grand challenges requires scholars to approach phenomena as nondualistic. Accordingly, they reveal that situated actions are not self-contained but related across space and time, requiring scholars to adopt a relational perspective. The debate concludes with a call for action as we embrace our dual role as scholars and citizens.

Cloudbezogenes IT-Service-Management als Gestaltungshebel für die Twin Transformation
(2026) Koch de Souza, Larissa; Stuber, Kim; Petrik, Dimitri; Engstler, Martin; Herzwurm, Georg

Stakeholder identification for a structured release planning approach in the automotive domain
(2022) Marner, Kristina; Wagner, Stefan; Ruhe, Guenther
In regulated domains like automotive, release planning is a complex process. This complex process consists of an agreement between product development processes for hardware as well as mechanic systems and approaches for software development. Particularly in automotive, the creation and synchronization of release plans for hardware as well as software is a challenge. Within the whole complex system development, it is challenging to consider the relevant stakeholders in the initial creation of a release plan. Depending on the context that a release plan shall be created for, there are different stakeholders that have to be considered from the beginning. There are numerous publications in the area of release planning, but there is no detailed research that shows which stakeholders have to be addressed in the automotive context. The aim of this work is to identify stakeholders of a release plan as an appropriate approach to create transparency in release planning in the automotive domain. Action research to elaborate relevant stakeholders for release planning was conducted at Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG. We present a detailed overview of identified stakeholders as well as their required content and added value regarding two pilot projects. With this contribution, identified stakeholders of release planning from the hardware and software points of view are introduced. We discuss, based on the results, why there are common stakeholders for the two projects and why there are individual stakeholders for each project. With this work, we present a more complete stakeholder identification and a more detailed understanding of their needs.

Response inhibition in autistic adults : a functional near‐infrared spectroscopy study in virtual reality
(2026) Vorreuther, Anna; Tagalidou, Nektaria; Lingelbach, Katharina; Hubert, Armin; Bareiß, Laura; Nittel, Tanja; Ristau, Marc; Vukelić, Mathias
Introduction. Response inhibition, a core component of executive functioning, has been studied extensively in autism, though results depend substantially on task choice and design. This study investigated whether autistic and non‐autistic adults differ in behavioral and neurophysiological responses during a visuospatial go/no‐go task (GNGT) implemented in virtual reality (VR). Methods. Participants (22 autistic, 10 non‐autistic) completed a blocked go/no‐go task in a VR environment, where stimuli appeared in varied spatial locations. Prefrontal hemodynamic responses were recorded using functional near‐infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), along with reaction times (RTs) and error rates. Results. Both groups demonstrated slower RTs and fewer errors in no‐go blocks compared to go blocks, with no significant group differences in behavioral performance. fNIRS analyses revealed significant right‐lateralized increases in oxygenated hemoglobin concentration in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) during no‐go blocks in non‐autistic adults only. Autistic adults showed no significant task‐related modulation of prefrontal cortex activity. Discussion. While behavioral performance was comparable across groups, only non‐autistic participants showed task‐related modulation of dlPFC activity. These findings highlight differential neural engagement during inhibition and illustrate the potential of fNIRS paradigms for examining the executive functioning of autistic individuals in VR.

A literature review on the impact of digitalisation on management control
    (2022) Fähndrich, Jochen
Digitalisation affects management control (MC). It leads to changes in the way MC activities are organised, performed and analysed. Companies of all industries, locations and sizes have to adapt their MC to digital circumstances, starting with the understanding and delimitation of MC tasks, through the modified application of MC instruments and the consideration of behavioural aspects of MC, to the organisation of the MC function within the company. This paper presents a systematic review of the literature according to Tranfield et al. (Br J Manag 14:207–222, 2003), focusing on the impact of digitalisation on MC. A comprehensive overview of scientific literature is provided by reviewing 166 highly rated accounting journals (based on multiple international journal ratings) and analysing 116 articles from January 2000 to August 2022. Based on the MC framework developed by Guenther (J Manag Control 23:269–290, 2013), the identified studies are categorised into the following research dimensions: tasks, instruments, organisation and behavioural aspects. Multiple studies highlight the continuous development of the MC function under the impact of digitalisation, including the extension of MC tasks, the adaptation of existing MC instruments and creation of new MC instruments, positive and negative behavioural aspects of digitalisation on MC and the establishment of new MC organisation models. In addition to the qualitative content analysis, this literature review also includes an analysis of the methods applied and illustrates their changes over time. This study reveals research gaps in relation to the current MC research and presents potential starting points for future research.

Anforderungen für Take-Back Systeme im Zeitalter der digitalen Nachhaltigkeit
(2024) Petrik, Dimitri; Truckses, Dana; Strobel, Gero

Understanding replication environments : a systems research approach to smart city replication of autonomous delivery robots
(2026) Ruess, Patrick; Weber, Svenja; Rzesnitzek, Sina
European policymakers chose the systematic funding of smart city initiatives to incentivize and accelerate innovation and sustainability transitions. To ensure these initiatives’ broader effectiveness, smart city replication has been incorporated in funding calls for research projects as a policy instrument for innovation diffusion, information dissemination and mutual learning. With a growing theoretical and empirical base for these replication activities, there is an increased awareness that integrating and transferring new ideas and solutions into the urban context requires a holistic perspective and includes various endogenous and exogenous influencing factors. This article proposes a systemic view by presenting a method for analysing the replication environment for autonomous delivery robots based on a causal loop diagram. The method is applied conceptually to a district in Munich. The developed approach, which is called Replication Causal Loop Diagram, serves as an analytical tool to generate and provide relevant contextual knowledge and information about the replication environment to facilitate the operational planning and implementation of replicable initiatives, solutions, and practices. In further development steps and in particular settings, the approach can also be a valuable addition to the replication portfolio for stakeholder engagement and consensus building.

A generative design of collaborative innovation space
    (2023) Klooker, Marie; Hölzle, Katharina
A workplace for collaboration can be a powerful tool for fostering collaborative innovation in an organization. However, many organizations have failed in realizing the benefits of collaborative innovation workplaces. Applying a sociomaterial lens to an empirical investigation of the creation and genesis of workplaces for collaborative innovation in six organizations, we expand the focus beyond identifying workplace's material and social elements to the emergence of a collaborative innovation space as an effective workplace for collaboration. We develop a dynamic generative design model for collaborative innovation spaces. This model draws the attention to practices involved in the creation of such space instead of spatial characteristics only. It presents three dimensions for creating collaborative innovation spaces: the collaborative workplace consisting of collaborative spatial layout, work practices, and organizational structures. All are created and manifested by means of a collaborative–participatory design approach and the practice of generative reflection instead of conventional evaluation measures. Ultimately, a mindset shift is set in motion, generating a sustainable emergence of a collaborative innovation space. We conclude that a collaborative innovation space as an in‐between space cannot be deliberately designed but rather evolves over time. Using our generative design model, organizations and stakeholder can actively become part of this emergence process.
