    Metallic coordination polymers using CS2 as starting material

    Organic polymers with "metallic" properties have found widespread interest during the last few years. Acetylene and aniline as well as different nitrogen and sulfur heterocycles have been used as starting materials. One main problem hampering the technical application of these solids up to now is their environmental and thermal instability. Therefore, we introduced metal ions to stabilize polymeric backbones with high electrical conductivity. Because of the enormous coordination ability of sulfur to many transition metal ions we decided to use a polymeric carbon-sulfur backbone.

    Die Optik hat in den letzten Jahren neuen Aufschwung genommen. Mitverantwortlich für diese Entwicklung sind sowohl die Verwendung von leistungsfähigen Computern als auch die Nachfrage nach immer besserer Auflösung und Bildqualität. Besonders positiv haben sich die Entwicklungen des Laser (1960) und der Holographie ausgewirkt. Immer neue Applikationen des gebündelten, kohärenten Laserlichtes werden erschlossen, doch will ich mich in diesem Zusammenhang auf die mögliche Weiterentwlckung der erwähnten Gebiete beschränken.

    Excited electronic states of flavin-containing coenzyme models

    In order to gain further insight into the physical basis of flavin-catalyzed reactions, the interactions of a flavin with a second flavin and with other aromatic ring systems were studied. For this purpose compounds through 1 were synthesized These compounds contain the interacting units in defined geometric orientation. A monomeric flavin and glutathione reductase a flavoenzyme of known active-site chemistry, were included as reference molecules. The present report deals with excited triplet states of the flavin compounds as studied by optical spectroscopy and optically detected magnetic resonances (ODMR) at 1.3K.

    Self-consistent modelling of pulsar magnetospheres

    The magnetosphere of a rapidly rotating, strongly magnetized neutron star with aligned magnetic and rotational axes (parallel rotator) is modelled numerically. Including the radiation of the particles accelerated to relativistic energies as an efficient damping mechanism, we obtain a quasi-stationary selfconsistent solution to this classical problem. The numerical simulation, which was started from the well-known vacuum solution, yields a global magnetospheric structure that can be characterized by two regions of oppositely charged particles, which eventually produce a relativistic pulsar wind, separated by a vacuum gap of considerable extent.

    Dynamics of poling PVDF between 25°C and 120°C

    PVDF films with high β-content are poled in an electric field of 60 MV/m at temperatures between 25°C and 120°C. At 25°C the alignment of dipoles takes place in a central poling zone during several hours of poling. When the temperature is increased to 120°C the poling time necessary to align the dipoles in this narrow zone is reduced to several seconds. In addition, at temperatures higher than 90°C and increased poling times the central poling zone first increases but later decreases in its dielectric displacement. Simultaneously in a 10 μm regime adjoining the positive electrode a secondary displacement zone starts to grow. The strong reduction of this peak under short circuit conditions indicates hetero-charge accumulation in front of an anode.

    Phononenphysik : Akustik bei Terahertz-Frequenzen

    Mechanische oder akustische Schwingungen und Wellen in Flüssigkeiten und Festkörpern sind wie elektromagnetische Wellen quantisiert und man bezeichnet die entsprechenden Energiequanten als akustische Phononen. Für Existenz und Ausbreitung dieser mechanischen Wellen besteht wegen des atomaren Aufbaus der Materie eine obere Frequenzgrenze, die je nach Substanz im Bereich bis etwa 10 THz liegt. Die Akustik bei THz-Frequenzen ist daher eine Erweiterung des Ultraschallbereichs zu den höchstmöglichen Frequenzen und dient der Untersuchung von Wellenausbreitung, Absorption und Streuung im Volumen oder an Grenzflächen von Körpern. Streuung und Absorption werden u.a. durch Resonanzübergänge bei Fremdatomen oder Gitterdefekten, z.B. Versetzungen verursacht. Solche Untersuchungen gehören zur akustischen Absorptionsspektroskopie, wobei die Nachweisempfindlichkeit um einige Größenordnungen höher sein kann als die im vergleichbaren Frequenzbereich liegende Ferninfrarotspektroskopie.

    Optical elements for atoms : a beamsplitter and a mirror

    In the first part of this article we attempt to provide a very brief introduction to atom optics. In the second and third part we report on recent experiments in our group on two specific atom-optical elements that may be useful in atom interferometers and atom cavities: the demonstration of a new beam splitter based on the diffraction of atomic matter waves from a "magneto-optical grating" and the investigation of a mirror based on the reflection of atoms from an evanescent light field.

    Optical methods of measuring rough surfaces

    The statistical parameters of surfaces to be measured for industrial applications vary over several orders of magnitude. Surfaces with large slopes or edges are particularly difficult to be recorded. Some measuring methods developed in our laboratory are compared and the range of applications are discussed. For polished and fine ground glass and metal surfaces a heterodyne profilometer with a vertical resolution of 0.5 nm, lateral resolution of 0.6 μm, and large scanning length is discussed. The interferometer can be changed from single- to double-pass operation by rotation of a quarter-wave-plate. For rougher surfaces a profilometer of the photometric-balance type with resolution Rq < 4 nm and dynamic range of 20 μm and an interference microscope with automated fringe evaluation is described. An integral white light roughness sensor covers the roughness range 0.04μm to 10μm and measures independently mean roughness and autocorrelation width.

    Nuclear magnetic shielding tensors for 1H, 13C, and 15N in organic solids

    A survey will be given of nuclear magnetic shielding tensors obtained by multiple pulse techniques for 1H in carboxylic acids and by high field NMR for 13C in carbonyl- and carboxyl groups of aromatic compounds and for 15N in pyridine and nitrobenzene.
