This thesis explores the potential role of the nitrogen vacancy defect (NV) in diamond and coupled NV networks as sensors or computational devices. The focus switches between the design of NV networks, tools to study and operate NVs on the nanoscale and applications of NVs as nanoscale devices. Four aspects are researched and presented. First the design through nanomask implantation and the scaling of NV spin networks through magnetic dipolar is discussed. Second the localization accuracy of superresolution microscopy is assessed on the nanoscale. Third optical addressing of NVs using superresolution microscopy and spectral addressing of NV spins using nanoscale gradient fields are investigated. Finally the NV is presented as a sensor for the characterization of nanoscale magentic devices such as the writer of hard disc drives.en
