Item Open Access Liquid phase sintering of SiC ceramics with rare earth sesquioxides(2002) Biswas, Koushik; Aldinger Fritz (Prof. Dr. rer. nat.)The objective of this work is to develop SiC ceramics using high refractory sintering additives which posses good high temperature as well as room temperature properties. Silicon carbide ceramics were produced by pressureless sintering of a mixture of alpha- and beta-SiC powders along with different combinations of rare earth sesquioxides and aluminium nitride as sintering additives. In order to understand the densification behaviour, the green bodies were sintered in Ar or N2 atmosphere in the temperature range of 1850 to 2150°C. The high temperature bending strength was measured under 4-point bending in temperatures between 1200 to 1500°C in air. 4-point bending creep rate measurements of liquid phase sintered SiC were also performed in air at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1500°C with different applied stress levels varying from 50 MPa to 300 MPa. Compliance tests were carried out under a transient load of 100 MPa with a cross head speed of 0.1 mm/s in the temperatures between 850 and 1450°C at intervals of 150°C. Oxidation resistance was measured at different temperatures varying from 1200 to 1500°C in air. The microstructural development was analysed with the help of scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The correlation between microstructure and thermomechanical properties of LPS-SiC are discussed.
