Enhancing knowledge processing in client/server environments
(1993) Thomas, Joachim; Mitschang, Bernhard; Mattos, Nelson Mendonca; Deßloch, Stefan
A great variety of techniques has been developed to optimize and enhance query processing for relational, client/server, distributed, parallel, and heterogeneous database systems (DBS). Based on that work and experience, we investigate how far those techniques are applicable to query processing in Knowledge Base Management Systems (KBMS). Our reference system is the KRISYS KBMS that consists of a knowledge-processing system at the client (clientbased processing) and a data-processing system at the server (database backend). We describe a unifying framework for query processing incorporating both processing systems (as realized in KRISYS). This allows to distribute and balance the amount of work done in the client and in the server. Based on an evaluation of that framework, several approaches to further enhance knowledge processing are reported.

Knowledge base management systems - the bases of advanced CAD
(1989) Deßloch, Stefan; Härder, Theo; Mattos, Nelson Mendonca; Mitschang, Bernhard
Semantic expressive representation of design objects, active system behavior combined with reasoning facilities, and efficient implementation concepts are necessary requirements for the construction of better CAD systems. Here, we describe our approach to a knowledge base management system and exemplify its usage for advanced CAD systems.

KRISYS : KBMS support for better CAD systems
(1989) Deßloch, Stefan; Härder, Theo; Mattos, Nelson Mendonca; Mitschang, Bernhard
The authors propose a knowledge-base management system based on the integration of database and artificial intelligence technology that provides adequate capabilities for the construction of advanced CAD systems. The approach is evaluated in view of other systems and its suitability is demonstrated by means of some examples from the area of architectural design. Throughout the authors refine their views of advanced CAD and define some inherent characteristics of better CAD.
