Making female researchers more visible to the general public through augmented reality
    (2024) Elghazaly, Alaa
The underrepresentation of female researchers in academia remains a pressing issue, limiting their visibility and recognition while perpetuating gender stereotypes that discourage young girls from pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). This thesis contributes to this research field by investigating how Augmented Reality (AR) can address this issue by increasing the visibility of female researchers at the University of Stuttgart. To achieve this, we developed and presented an initial mockup to a group of AR experts during a VISUS colloquium, gathering valuable feedback on the feasibility of the proposed designs. Subsequently, we collected information about female researchers, staff, and alumni through an online survey and in-person interviews. This data was integrated into the InnoVisible application, an AR-based system designed to showcase researcher profiles using a 3D timeline and a 3D globe. We conducted a formative study involving 25 participants to evaluate the usability of InnoVisible. The results underscore InnoVisible’s potential as an engaging medium to increase female researcher visibility, supported by its high usability scores and positive participants’ feedback. This work contributes a promising approach to combating gender stereotypes, inspiring young girls, and fostering inclusivity in academia. The findings establish a solid foundation for further development and implementation, which could be integrated into an AR-based campus tour at the University of Stuttgart in the future.
