Superabsorbing additions in concrete : applications, modelling and comparison of different internal water sources
    (2009) Mönnig, Sven; Reinhardt, Hans-Wolf (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Prof. h.c. Dr.-Ing. E.h.)
The work is structured into three parts: the investigation of water absorbent lightweight aggregates and superabsorbent polymers, the comparison and the determination of determinant material properties and finally the modeling of concrete mixtures with lightweight aggregates and superabsorbent polymers. The tests show, that the properties of concrete mixtures with saturated lightweight aggregates are dependent on the volumetric content of lightweight aggregates, their properties, the degree of saturation and the duration of the saturation process. Additional trials show, that different capabilities for the use of superabsorbent polymers exist: they can be used as air entrainer or as thickening agent. The comparison of water saturated lightweight aggregates and superabsorbent polymers show varying influences on the shrinkage behavior of the concrete mixture: mixtures with lightweight aggregates showed swelling while mixtures with SAP had a retarded shrinkage begin. The compressive and bending tensile strength was comparable. The computation of temperature and moisture distribution of a cured concrete is, at least for not autogenous storage, dependent on different coefficients. The work presents the most important ones and shows the influence of internal curing on the properties and results, which were calculated with a computer model for internal curing.
