The present work presents in a first part a framework that allows the interpretation of density functional theory (DFT) results using the intuitive chemical language of bonding and antibonding bonds. Thereby the total energy is separated in different contributions with well defined meanings. One of these contributions, Ecov, makes possible a detailed quantitative analysis of the bonds in the crystal. In the second part, the implementation of the newly defined quantities within a pseudopotential DFT-program are presented. The formalism involves the projection of the single particle wavefunctions onto a set of atom-localized functions and the calculation of the Hamiltonian matrix elements using a combination of real- and reciprocal-space methods. In the last part, the new program is applied to three different systems leading to new insight for the following points. For Al3Ti and Al3Sc in the D022 and L12 structures: The covalent bond energies are tabulated for all bonds, making the relative importance of different contributions explicit. The stabilizing effect of the tetragonal distortion on the D022 structure in Al3Ti is understood in terms of a change in the bonding properties of certain bonds. The progressive stabilization of the D022 structure (and the simultaneous destabilization of the L12 structure) going from Al3Sc, Al3Ti to Al3V is traced back to the filling of certain bonding (antibonding) states. In similar terms conclusions are drown for the stabilization of the L12 structure upon alloying with certain transition metal elements. The directionality of the bonds in Al3Ti and Al3Sc is addressed and compared to Ni3Al. The bulk hcp-Ru, the free Ru surface and the oxygen covered Ru-surface: The inwards relaxation of the first Ru layer of the free Ru-surface and the outwards relaxation of the same Ru layer induced by the O adsorption are explained in terms of the covalent bond energy.
