In the future, manufacturing companies will have to deal with market turbulences triggered by globalization and mass customization more than ever before. In addition, due to rapidly changing market demands the life cycles of consumer goods are shorter than the payback period of the machinery and equipment on which they are manufactured. Therefore machine tools must be rapidly adaptable to alternating and unpredictable production orders. They must be reconfigurable. This affects both the mechanical design and the control system. If a machine tool is reconfigured by exchanging machine modules, the Numerical Control (NC) must be adapted to the new machine structure also. In doing so dependencies between the machine configuration and the NC must be considered. Specialists normally have these dependencies in mind during the initial design and commissioning phase of the NC configuration. That’s why the NC is closely related to a special machine configuration, and the NC has to be configured anew after each mechanical reconfiguration. So, the configuration of the NC must be as automated as far as possible. In this doctoral thesis plug-and-play-methods are transferred to the configuration of NC and a self-adaptable NC is designed which adapts itself automatically to a machine configuration. To sum up, the following innovations were developed: • A manufacturer independent concept of an adaptable NC was created by systematisation the NC configuration process. The concept is based on general NC configuration objects which are used to configure the NC. • Plug-and-play-systems were analysed in order to identify properties of plug-and-play-devices and to define preconditions to apply plug-and-play-methods to NC technology. • A self-adaptable NC and a modular machine concept based on mechatronic modules were defined by transferring properties of plug-and-play-systems to machine tools. • An information model was defined which represents the functional relations between machine and NC configuration. It includes the NC configuration objects of an adaptable NC. • For the self-adaptation of the NC a model based configuration method was developed. This method uses the functional relations of the information model to identify the NC configuration objects related to the machine modules of the machine configuration. The combination of the NC configuration objects is defined by patterns for NC configurations. A generator is used to create a configuration file out of the information model. This configuration file is afterwards interpreted by the adaptable NC.
