Simulating these processes in the laboratory is, however, a challenge. The technique of laser induced dielectric breakdown was first used for this purpose almost 50 years ago. Since then, laser-based experiments have helped to simulate high energy processes in the Tunguska and Chicxulub impact events, heavy bombardment on the early Earth, prebiotic chemical evolution, space weathering of celestial bodies and meteor plasma. This review summarizes the current level of knowledge and outlines possible paths of future development.Item Open Access The effects of airfoil thickness on dynamic stall characteristics of high‐solidity vertical axis wind turbines(2021) Bangga, Galih; Hutani, Surya; Heramarwan, HenidyaThe flow physics of high solidity vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) is influenced by the dynamic stall effects. The present study is aimed at investigating the effects of airfoil thickness on the unsteady characteristics of high solidity VAWTs. Seven different national advisory committee for aeronautics (NACA) airfoils (0008, 0012, 0018, 0021, 0025, 0030, 0040) are investigated. A high fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach is used to examine the load and flow characteristics in detail. Before the study is undertaken, the CFD simulation is validated with experimental data as well as large eddy simulation results with sound agreement. The investigation demonstrates that increasing the airfoil thickness is actually beneficial not only for suppressing the dynamic stall effects but also to improve the performance of high solidity turbines. Interestingly this is accompanied by a slight reduction in thrust component. The strength and radius of the dynamic stall vortex decrease with increasing airfoil thickness. The airfoil thickness strongly influences the pressure distributions during dynamic stall process, which is driven by the suction peak near the leading edge. The knowledge gained might be used by blade engineers for designing future turbines and for improving the accuracy of engineering models.Item Open Access Editorial - physics of droplets(2024) Planchette, Carole; Lamanna, Grazia; Pan, Kuo-LongItem Open Access In silico modeling of coupled physical‐biogeochemical (P‐BGC) processes in Antarctic Sea ice(2021) Thom, Andrea; Ricken, TimAntarctic sea ice formation in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) and its mutual effects on ocean biology and chemistry is very sensitive to climate change. The formation of ’pancake’ ice floes and the coupled physical‐biogeochemical (P‐BGC) processes can be modeled by using the continuum mechanical multi‐phase description of the extended Theory of Porous Media (eTPM), and simulated with the Finite Element Method (FEM). The ice formation is described via a salinity‐temperature equilibrium of the enclosed ocean water. The growth of the thriving ice algae, enclosed and attached to the pancake ice floes, is modeled with a phenomenological approach given with an ordinary differential equation.Item Open Access Investigation of Lagrangian Areas of Minimal Stretching (LAMS) in a turbulent boundary layer(2023) Rist, Ulrich; Weinschenk, Matthias; Wenzel, ChristophItem Open Access Experimental validation of a numerical coupling environment applying FEM and CFD(2023) Hartmann, Christopher; Schweikert, Julia; Cottier, François; Israel, Ute; Gier, Jochen; Wolfersdorf, Jens vonExperimental results for the transient heat transfer characteristics over a flat plate and over a plate with V-shaped ribs were compared to numerical results from a coupling environment applying FEM and CFD. In order to simulate transient effects in the cooling process of engine components during typical flight missions, the temperature and the velocity at the inlet of the channel were varied over time. The transient temperature distribution at the plate was measured using infrared thermography. Five different plate materials (perspex, PEEK, quartz, aluminum, and steel) were considered to investigate the influence of thermal conduction on the heat transfer between solid and fluid depending on the Biot number. The experimental results represent a reference database for a Python-based coupling environment applying CalculiX (FEM) and ANSYS CFX (CFD). The results were additionally compared to numerical results simulating the complete transient conjugated heat transfer with CFD. A good agreement between the numerical and the experimental results was achieved using different coupling sizes at different Biot numbers for the flat plate and the plate with V-shaped ribs.
