Item Open Access On the problem of apparent mass (E3) : discussion(1970) Kobus, HelmutThe author has developed a method for calculating the added-mass coefficient λ e for vibrating structures which yields results in close agreement with experiments. The following comments do not refer to the method of calculation, but rather to the remarks about the similarity aspects of modelling vibrating structures.Item Open Access Effect of buoyancy on the flow and temperature fields near injection wells(1979) Mehlhorn, Hans; Kobus, HelmutThe injection of heated water into a ground water stream of constant velocity is studied. The heated water is discharged through a fully penetrating injection well into a confined aquifer of constant thickness. For steady state conditions and under the assumption that heat conduction and dispersion in the aquifer and through the confining layers are negligible in comparison to the convective heat transport, it is shown that the flow and temperature field is dependent on the relative infiltration rate and on the relative buoyancy of well discharge. First results of a steady-state three-dimensional numerical model are given. Item Open Access Hydraulic design considerations for cooling tower collector basins(1979) Kobus, Helmut; Westrich, BernhardConventional collector basins of natural draft cooling towers have a tendency towards rapid sedimentation. In order to avoid this problem, a shallow type of basin with a system of draining canals is developped. Numerical calculations supplemented by hydraulic model tests yield depths, velocities and energy losses in the system. Prototype measurements are shown to be in good agreement with numerical and experimental predictions for all modes of operation.Item Open Access On the use of air-bubble screens as oil barriers(1975) Kobus, HelmutFrom an analytical and experimental investigation of the flow field induced by an air-bubble screen, the resulting surface current can be predicted as a function of water depth and air discharge, both in a standing water body and in a cross current. This information about the flow field leads to a design procedure for pneumatic oil barriers. It is found that pneumatic installations designed properly for safe and economic performance offer functional and operational advantages over mechanical oil barriers.
