Item Open Access Alumina and zirconia-reinforced polyamide PA-12 composites for biomedical additive manufacturing(2021) Nakonieczny, Damian S.; Kern, Frank; Dufner, Lukas; Antonowicz, Magdalena; Matus, KrzysztofThis work aimed to prepare a composite with a polyamide (PA) matrix and surface-modified ZrO2 or Al2O3 to be used as ceramic fillers (CFs). Those composites contained 30 wt.% ceramic powder to 70 wt.% polymer. Possible applications for this type of composite include bioengineering applications especially in the fields of dental prosthetics and orthopaedics. The ceramic fillers were subjected to chemical surface modification with Piranha Solution and suspension in 10 M sodium hydroxide and Si3N4 to achieve the highest possible surface development and to introduce additional functional groups. This was to improve the bonding between the CFs and the polymer matrix. Both CFs were examined for particle size distribution (PSD), functional groups (FTIR), chemical composition (XPS), phase composition (XRD), and morphology and chemical composition (SEM/EDS). Filaments were created from the powders prepared in this way and were then used for 3D FDM printing. Samples were subjected to mechanical tests (tensility, hardness) and soaking tests in a high-pressure autoclave in artificial saliva for 14, 21, and 29 days.Item Open Access Objektvermessung mit bildanalysegestützten 3D-Meßverfahren : allgemeine Angaben zum Teilprojekt C6(1986) Tiziani, Hans J.Obwohl bei der digitalen Bildverarbeitung in den letzten Jahren große Fortschritte erzielt wurden, ist die schnelle Erfassung von 3-D Information nach wie vor ein ungelöstes Problem. Erst eine Kombination der digitalen 2D-Bildverarbeitung mit einem Abstandsmeßverfahren erlaubt eine schnelle, dreidimensionale Objekterfassung. Hierbei wird ein unter problemangepasster Beleuchtung gewonnenes Graubild mit Hilfe der digitalen Bildverarbeitung bezüglich 3D-gestaltsrelevanten Merkmalen untersucht. Aufgrund dieser Daten erfolgt eine Festlegung der 3D-Antastpunkte auf das zur Objektrekonstruktion notwendige Minimum. Daraufhin werden die selektierten Antastpositionen durch ein Abstandsmeßverfahren in Echtzeit räumlich vermessen. Anschließend erfolgt die Rekonstruktion der dreidimensionalen Objektgestalt. Das auf dynamischer Triangulation basierende Abstandsmeßverfahren gestattet eine freie Wahl der Antastpunkte, was eine anwendungsangepasste Steuerung des Abtastvorgangs erlaubt und somit eine hochflexible Unterstützung der 2D-Bildverarbeitung ermöglicht. Eine Kombination aus dynamischer Abtastung und angepasster Beleuchtung mit der digitalen Bildverarbeitung soll zu einem dynamischen System zur 3D-Objektlokalisierung und -Oberflächenerfassung im Nahbereich führen. Typische Objekte sollen hierbei Fahrzeuge und Karosserieteile sein.Item Open Access Analyzing and optimizing multibody systems(1992) Bestle, Dieter; Eberhard, PeterOptimization of holonomic as well as non-holonomic multibody systems is presented as a nonlinear programming problem that can be solved with general-purpose optimization codes. The adjoint variable approach is used for calculating design derivatives of a rather general integral type performance measure with respect to design parameters. The resulting equations are solved by numerical integration backward in time. A multi-step integration algorithm with order and step-size control is adapted for this application by including an interpolation scheme. Numerical experiments and a comparison to the common approach of approximating the gradient of the performance measure by finite differences show that high efficiency, accuracy, and reliability are achievable.Item Open Access A nonsmooth generalized‐alpha method for mechanical systems with frictional contact(2021) Capobianco, Giuseppe; Harsch, Jonas; Eugster, Simon R.; Leine, Remco I.In this article, the existing nonsmooth generalized‐α method for the simulation of mechanical systems with frictionless contacts, modeled as unilateral constraints, is extended to systems with frictional contacts. On that account, we complement the unilateral constraints with set‐valued Coulomb‐type friction laws. Moreover, we devise a set of benchmark systems, which can be used to validate numerical schemes for mechanical systems with frictional contacts. Finally, this set of benchmarks is used to numerically assert the properties striven for during the derivation of the presented scheme. Specifically, we show that the presented scheme can reproduce the dynamics of the frictional contact adequately and no numerical penetration of the contacting bodies arises - a big issue for most popular time‐stepping schemes such as the one of Moreau. Moreover, we demonstrate that the presented scheme performs well for multibody systems containing flexible parts and that it allows general parametrizations such as the use of unit quaternions for the rotation of rigid bodies.Item Open Access Statistical power analysis in reliability demonstration testing : the probability of test success(2022) Grundler, Alexander; Dazer, Martin; Herzig, ThomasStatistical power analyses are used in the design of experiments to determine the required number of specimens, and thus the expenditure, of a test. Commonly, when analyzing and planning life tests of technical products, only the confidence level is taken into account for assessing uncertainty. However, due to the sampling error, the confidence interval estimation varies from test to test; therefore, the number of specimens needed to yield a successful reliability demonstration cannot be derived by this. In this paper, a procedure is presented that facilitates the integration of statistical power analysis into reliability demonstration test planning. The Probability of Test Success is introduced as a metric in order to place the statistical power in the context of life test planning of technical products. It contains the information concerning the probability that a life test is capable of demonstrating a required lifetime, reliability, and confidence. In turn, it enables the assessment and comparison of various life test types, such as success run, non-censored, and censored life tests. The main results are four calculation methods for the Probability of Test Success for various test scenarios: a general method which is capable of dealing with all possible scenarios, a calculation method mimicking the actual test procedure, and two analytic approaches for failure-free and failure-based tests which make use of the central limit theorem and asymptotic properties of several statistics, and therefore simplify the effort involved in planning life tests. The calculation methods are compared and their respective advantages and disadvantages worked out; furthermore, the scenarios in which each method is to be preferred are illustrated. The applicability of the developed procedure for planning reliability demonstration tests using the Probability of Test Success is additionally illustrated by a case study.Item Open Access Comprehensive study of failure mechanisms of field-aged automotive lead batteries(2023) Conradt, Rafael; Schröer, Philipp; Dazer, Martin; Wirth, Jonathan; Jöris, Florian; Schulte, Dominik; Birke, Kai PeterModern vehicles have increasing safety requirements and a need for reliable low-voltage power supply in their on-board power supply systems. Understanding the causes and probabilities of failures in a 12 V power supply is crucial. Field analyses of aged and failed 12 V lead batteries can provide valuable insights regarding this topic. In a previous study, non-invasive electrical testing was used to objectively determine the reasons for failure and the lifetime of individual batteries. By identifying all of the potential failure mechanisms, the Latin hypercube sampling method was found to effectively reduce the required sample size. To ensure sufficient confidence in validating diagnostic algorithms and calculating time-dependent failure rates, all identified aging phenomena must be considered. This study presents a probability distribution of the failure mechanisms that occur in the field, as well as provides insights into potential opportunities, but it also challenges diagnostic approaches for current and future vehicles.Item Open Access Cooperative search by combining simulated and real robots in a swarm under the view of multibody system dynamics(2013) Tang, Qirong; Eberhard, PeterThis paper presents a new approach for cooperative search of a robot swarm. After modeling the robot, the mechanical Particle Swarm Optimization method is conducted based on physical robot properties. Benefiting from the effective localization and navigation by sensor data fusion, a mixed robot swarm which contains both simulated and real robots is then successfully used for searching a target cooperatively. With the promising results from experiments based on different scenarios, the feasibility, the interaction of real and simulated robots, the fault tolerance, and also the scalability of the proposed method are investigated.Item Open Access Simulation study on single-lip deep hole drilling using design of experiments(2021) Fandino, Daniel; Guski, Vinzenz; Wegert, Robert; Möhring, Hans-Christian; Schmauder, SiegfriedSingle-lip deep hole drilling (SLD) is characterized by a high surface quality and compressive residual stress in the subsurface of the drill hole. These properties are strongly dependent on the cutting parameters of the SLD process and the actual geometry of the insert and the guide pads. In the present work, full 3D FE simulations of the SLD process were carried out to analyze the thermo-mechanical as-is state in the drilling contact zone by evaluating the feed force, the temperature, as well as the residual stress in the drill hole subsurface. An extensive simulation study was conducted on the effect of the process parameters on the properties using design of experiments (DoE). For the simulations, the Johnson-Cook (JC) constitutive law and the element elimination technique (EET) were applied to represent the material behavior of the workpiece, including chip formation. In-process measurements as well as results from the hole-drilling method to determine residual stresses were conducted to verify the numerical results. By means of DoE and analysis of variance (ANOVA), regression models were developed to describe the effect of the feed rate, cutting speed, and guide pad height on the temperature, feed force, and residual stress in the subsurface.Item Open Access Contouring by electronic speckle pattern interferometry with quadruple-beam illumination(1992) Zou, Yunlu; Diao, Hongyan; Peng, Xiang; Tiziani, Hans J.We present a new arrangement for contouring by electronic speckle pattern interferometry with four illumination beams, thereby making it unnecessary to move anything during the measurement.Item Open Access Mechanical properties and electrical discharge machinability of alumina-10 vol% zirconia-28 vol% titanium nitride composites(2020) Gommeringer, Andrea; Kern, FrankElectrical discharge machinable ceramics provide an alternative machining route independent on the material hardness which enables manufacturing of customized ceramic components. In this study a composite material based on an alumina/zirconia matrix and an electrically conductive titanium nitride dispersion was manufactured by hot pressing and characterized with respect to microstructure, mechanical properties and ED-machinability by die sinking. The composites show a combination of high strength of 700 MPa, hardness of 17-18 GPa and moderate fracture resistance of 4.5-5 MPa√m. With 40 kS/m the electrical conductivity is sufficiently high to ensure ED-machinability.
