Item Open Access Depth from axial differential perspective(2022) Faulhaber, Andreas; Krächan, Clara; Haist, TobiasWe introduce an imaging-based passive on-axis technique for measuring the distance of individual objects in complex scenes. Two axially separated pupil positions acquire images (can be realized simultaneously or sequentially). Based on the difference in magnification for objects within the images, the distance to the objects can be inferred. The method avoids some of the disadvantages of passive triangulation sensors (e.g., correspondence, shadowing), is easy to implement and offers high lateral resolution. Due to the principle of operation it is especially suited for applications requiring only low to medium axial resolution. Theoretical findings, as well as follow-up experimental measurements, show obtainable resolutions in the range of few centimeters for distances of up to several meters. Item Open Access Holographic wide-angle system for deformation measurement of extended structures(2022) Guerra, Flavio; Wilhelm, Philipp; Haist, TobiasWe introduce a holographic wide angle system that combines the accuracy of a long focal length with the extended field of view of a wide angle lens. To accomplish this, we use a computer-generated hologram (CGH) in front of the lens to diffract light from (a discrete number of) specific angular locations. This method is tested in laboratory conditions, as well as under real-world conditions. This measurement system was developed as a possible tool for real-time movement tracking and control of extended dynamic structures, such as bridges and high-rise buildings. Within that application, the obtained measurement uncertainty is 10 μm in object space at 10 m distance spanning 10 m width.Item Open Access Design and realization of a miniaturized high resolution computed tomography imaging spectrometer(2023) Amann, Simon; Haist, Tobias; Gatto, Alexander; Kamm, Markus; Herkommer, AloisItem Open Access Two polarization-based games(2008) Haist, TobiasFor pupils and students, polarization is a rather difficult topic lacking the vividness of most other optical phenomena. Direct observation of polarization is not really possible and, therefore, motivation to understand polarization is often not very high. It is intimating to try to raise motivation by surprising demonstrations. Apart from the well known experiments (two or three polarizers in series, strain measurement by birefringence, polarizers in photography, just to name a few) I tried raising interest by using polarization-based games. Item Open Access Black box : an implementation using lasers, smoke and fluorescence(2009) Haist, Tobias; Knoll, Ralf; Lorenz, AndreasWe present the optical implementation of the board game "black box" using a laser, fluorescence and smoke.
