    Depth from axial differential perspective
(2022) Faulhaber, Andreas; Krächan, Clara; Haist, Tobias
We introduce an imaging-based passive on-axis technique for measuring the distance of individual objects in complex scenes. Two axially separated pupil positions acquire images (can be realized simultaneously or sequentially). Based on the difference in magnification for objects within the images, the distance to the objects can be inferred. The method avoids some of the disadvantages of passive triangulation sensors (e.g., correspondence, shadowing), is easy to implement and offers high lateral resolution. Due to the principle of operation it is especially suited for applications requiring only low to medium axial resolution. Theoretical findings, as well as follow-up experimental measurements, show obtainable resolutions in the range of few centimeters for distances of up to several meters.

Enzyme-assisted circular additive manufacturing as an enabling technology for a circular bioeconomy : a conceptual review
(2024) Protte-Freitag, Kristin; Gotzig, Sophia; Rothe, Hannah; Schwarz, Oliver; Silber, Nadine; Miehe, Robert
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a decisive element in the sustainable transformation of technologies. And yet its inherent potential has not been fully utilized. In particular, the use of biological materials represents a comparatively new dimension that is still in the early stages of deployment. In order to be considered sustainable and contribute to the circular economy, various challenges need to be overcome. Here, the literature focusing on sustainable, circular approaches is reviewed. It appears that existing processes are not yet capable of being used as circular economy technologies as they are neither able to process residual and waste materials, nor are the produced products easily biodegradable. Enzymatic approaches, however, appear promising. Based on this, a novel concept called enzyme-assisted circular additive manufacturing was developed. Various process combinations using enzymes along the process chain, starting with the preparation of side streams, through the functionalization of biopolymers to the actual printing process and post-processing, are outlined. Future aspects are discussed, stressing the necessity for AM processes to minimize or avoid the use of chemicals such as solvents or binding agents, the need to save energy through lower process temperatures and thereby reduce CO2 consumption, and the necessity for complete biodegradability of the materials used.

Nonlinear dynamics of the tippedisk : a holistic analysis
(2023) Sailer, Simon; Leine, Remco I. (Prof. Dr. ir. habil.)
This dissertation deals with the tippedisk which is a new mechanical-mathematical archetype for friction-induced instabilities and exhibits an energetically counterintuitive inversion phenomenon. In a holistic analysis, the dynamics of the tippedisk is investigated numerically in the field of multibody simulation, theoretically in the field of nonlinear dynamics, and experimentally in the focus of applied physics. Based on different nonsmooth rigid body models with set-valued force laws, the main physical mechanisms inducing the inversion behavior are identified and the governing system equations are derived. Subsequent model reduction results in a reduced system in the form of an ordinary differential equation, which is suited to be studied in the context of nonlinear dynamics. Both the local stability behavior of the non-inverted and inverted stationary spinning motions as well as the global proof of an existing heteroclinic saddle connection allow the dynamic behavior of the tippedisk to be captured analytically. The particular structure of the mathematical model reveals a singularly perturbed dynamics that evolves on multiple time scales and is characterized by slow rolling and fast sliding motions of the tippedisk. Utilizing perturbation expansions and an analysis in dimensionless quantities, the qualitative dynamics is characterized by closed-form expressions, from which a global stability map is deduced. Based on this complete stability map, three different bifurcation scenarios are identified, which correspond to different geometric and inertia properties, defining three qualitatively different types of tippedisks. Finally, the mathematical investigation is complemented by high-speed experiments on a real test specimen. Qualitative comparison of experimental measurements with simulations at different levels of abstraction completes the holistic approach to the dynamic analysis of the tippedisk.

    Probabilistic modelling of population variability
(2025) Wagner, Vincent; Radde, Nicole (Prof. Dr. rer. nat.)
Vincent Wagner's dissertation summarises progress in the probabilistic modelling of population variability. It comprises two chapters with complementary approaches to this challenging and broad topic. The first chapter deals with the Method of Moments for the Chemical Master Equation, while the second chapter uses random variable transformations to estimate distributed simulation model parameters.
