    Digital factory transformation from a servitization perspective : fields of action for developing internal smart services

    In recent years, a complex set of dynamic developments driven by both the economy and the emergence of digital technologies has put pressure on manufacturing companies to adapt. The concept of servitization, i.e., the shift from a product-centric to a service-centric value creation logic, can help manufacturing companies stabilize their business in such volatile times. Existing academic literature investigates the potential and challenges of servitization and the associated development of data-based services, so-called smart services, with a view to external market performance. However, with the increasing use of digital technologies in manufacturing and the development of internal smart services based on them, we argue that the existing insights on external servitization are also of interest for internal transformation. In this paper, we identify key findings from service literature, apply them to digital factory transformation, and structure them into six fields of action along the dimensions of people, technology, and organization. As a result, recommendations for designing digital factory transformation in manufacturing companies are derived from the perspective of servitization and developing internal smart services.

    We are all pattern makers! : how a flat ontology connects organizational routines and grand challenges

    Adopting a flat ontology, we discuss how phenomena of societal concern are connected to organizational routines. We conceptualize grand challenges as large patterns of actions to overcome the micro-macro divide prevalent in existing research. We introduce spatial, temporal, and agentic relations as three interrelated aspects of scale that are of particular interest and demonstrate how social phenomena may be approached through these relations. Focusing on the situated enactment of routines allows us to identify weakening and strengthening between actors and their actions as important processes that reflect the continuous patterning of grand challenges. We contribute to the literature by highlighting the consequentiality of mundane actions and by questioning the dominant approach to change in research on grand challenges. Our insights offer several practical implications for intervening on grand challenges.

    Managing dilemmas of resource mobilization through jugaad : a multi‐method study of social enterprises in Indian healthcare

    This study focuses on the dilemmas that social entrepreneurs encounter and the practices used to manage dilemmas over time. Using a multi‐method approach involving event structure analysis and an inductive multiple case study, we find that four key organizational practices - asset multiplication, leveraging human capital, building social embeddedness, and affordable quality - embody the jugaad elements of frugality and inclusivity. Adding to the social entrepreneurship literature, this study demonstrates that the jugaad approach is conceptually distinct from bricolage and relevant to the study of social enterprises' resource mobilization processes. How do social enterprises encounter and manage dilemmas over time in emerging markets? The present study responds to this question, finding that social entrepreneurs mobilize resources and overcome dilemmas using the practices of jugaad, the “Indian method” of problem‐solving. These jugaad practices can be used to build and allocate resources and create trade‐offs among the jugaad elements of frugality and inclusivity. Based on our results, we recommend that social entrepreneurs pay close attention to how to proceduralize human assets, which would allow these entrepreneurs to build training systems that are highly task‐focused and replicated across functions. We also encourage social entrepreneurs to work in rural markets and seek wider resource pools within these markets by building social embeddedness in rural communities.

    In diesem Bericht wird die Transformation des Stromsystems als zentrale Stellschraube zur Erreichung der Klimaziele analysiert. Dabei wird die Dekarbonisierung, insbesondere der Ausstieg aus der Kohleverstromung, in den Fokus gerückt. Anhand einer systematischen Vorgehensweise werden Transformationsszenarien für das deutsche Energiesystem identifiziert, analysiert und bewertet. Die Analyse erfolgt mithilfe unterschiedlicher computergestützter Modelle, um die Auswirkungen im gesamten System abschätzen zu können. Es werden sowohl Wechselwirkungen im Stromsystem und im Energiesystem, als auch im Wirtschaftssystem und im Bereich Ressourcen und Umwelt untersucht.

Insbesondere sollten Aus- und Weiterbildung, Aufstiegsplanung und Möglichkeiten der Personalentwicklung untersucht werden.

    Warentestergebnisse und Absatzpolitik von Unternehmen : Bericht über eine forschungsbezogene Lehrveranstaltung des Seminars für Betriebswirtschaftliche Marktlehre im SS 1977 und WS 1977/78

    Der vorliegende Arbeitsbericht aus dem Seminar für Betriebswirtschaftliche Marktlehre will über eine forschungsbezogene Lehrveranstaltung (bzw. ein in die Lehre integriertes Forschungsprojekt) informieren, die mit Unterstützung des Seminars im SS 1977 und WS 1977/78 durchgeführt wurde. Die Thematik dieser Lehrveranstaltung ist an einer Nahtstelle des Marketing angesiedelt und gibt die Möglichkeit, das Konzept des "Business Marketing" in einen Zusammenhang mit verbraucherpolitischen Vorstellungen zu bringen (speziell: Verbraucherinformationspolitik). Die Ausweitung der Sichtweise über die "übliche" Marketing-Perspektive hinaus ist im Verständnis der Marketing-Ausbildung des Seminars fest verankert und hat in der Vergangenheit in entsprechenden Lehrveranstaltungsthemen seinen Niederschlag gefunden. In didaktischer Hinsicht wird ein ebenfalls bereits mehrfach realisiertes Anliegen zu verwirklichen gesucht: die Verbindung von theoretischer Analyse im Hörsaal mit empirisch gerichteter Praxis. Eine Einschätzung der Aussagekraft der Untersuchung sollte davon ausgehen, daß hier "Lehrlinge der empirischen Sozialforschung" in sehr begrenztem Rahmen einer Lehrveranstaltung Erfahrungen sammeln wollten.

    Food waste generation in Germany in the scope of European legal requirements for monitoring and reporting

    The European Commission and the German government are committed to the United Nations SDG target 12.3 of reducing food waste along production chains and halving it at retail and consumer levels by 2030. European member states are required to monitor national food waste levels and report annual progress to the European Commission from 2020 onward. In this regard, the main objective of our study is to provide food waste quantities for Germany by applying methods meeting the legal requirements for monitoring and reporting within Europe-wide harmonized methodology. Our results refer to 2015 and are based on the best available data, using a combination of official statistics, surveys, and literature. We found that approx. 11.9 ± 2.4 million tonnes (144 ± 28 kg/(cap·year)) of food waste were generated in Germany, while the reduction potentials varied throughout the different sectors. Even though the underlying data show uncertainties, the outcome of the study represents a starting point for the upcoming monitoring activities in Germany by uncovering data and knowledge gaps. To meet the political reduction targets, a national food waste strategy was launched in 2019 by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, which is an important step toward cooperation and exchange between actors along the entire food chain, raising awareness, and improving data quality, monitoring, and implementation of prevention measures in practice.

    Willingness to pay for digital wellbeing features on social network sites : a study with Arab and European samples

    In recent years, concerns over the potential negative impacts of social network sites (SNS) on users’ digital wellbeing are on the rise. These concerns have sparked a growing demand for SNS to introduce changes to their business model and offer features that prioritize users’ wellbeing, even if it means introducing fees to users. Still, it is questionable whether such a new model is welcomed by users and commercially valid. In this paper, we investigate (i) people’s willingness to pay (WTP) for digital wellbeing services designed to foster more autonomy, control, and personal growth in users and (ii) the influence of sociodemographic variables, personality, and social networks use disorder (SNUD) on WTP. Data were collected through an online survey with participants from two distinct cultural contexts, the European and Arabic. The samples comprised 262 participants from Europe (Males: 57.63%) and 251 from Arab countries (Males: 60.56%). The participants ranged in age from 18 to 66 years (MEurope = 29.16, SD = 8.42; MArab = 31.24, SD = 8.23). The results revealed that a notable proportion of participants were willing to pay for digital wellbeing services (Europe: 24%; Arab: 30%). Females in the European sample demonstrated a higher WTP for “Mental Health Issues Minimization” compared to males. In the Arab sample, males showed a higher WTP for “Safeguarding Data Privacy” than females. Multiple regression analyses revealed that SNUD and the need for cognition emerged as significant and positive predictors of WTP in both the European and Arab samples. Differences in the relations of personality traits and sociodemographic variables on WTP in each sample were noted. These insights contribute to our understanding of the factors shaping individuals’ preferences and valuation related to digital wellbeing services on SNS and highlight the importance of considering sociodemographic variables and personal factors as well as cultural contexts when planning and introducing them.

    Solving high-dimensional dynamic portfolio choice models with hierarchical B-splines on sparse grids

    Discrete time dynamic programming to solve dynamic portfolio choice models has three immanent issues: firstly, the curse of dimensionality prohibits more than a handful of continuous states. Secondly, in higher dimensions, even regular sparse grid discretizations need too many grid points for sufficiently accurate approximations of the value function. Thirdly, the models usually require continuous control variables, and hence gradient-based optimization with smooth approximations of the value function is necessary to obtain accurate solutions to the optimization problem. For the first time, we enable accurate and fast numerical solutions with gradient-based optimization while still allowing for spatial adaptivity using hierarchical B-splines on sparse grids. When compared to the standard linear bases on sparse grids or finite difference approximations of the gradient, our approach saves an order of magnitude in total computational complexity for a representative dynamic portfolio choice model with varying state space dimensionality, stochastic sample space, and choice variables.
