Item Open Access Direct electrodialysis of fermentation broth with periodic removal of fouling layers(1992) Kuppinger, Franz-Felix; Busch, Claudia; Eigenberger, GerhartIn the present investigation the fermentation broth is fed directly into the electrodialysis module without prefiltration. Under these conditions a biofouling layer of living and dead parts of the fermentation broth builds up primarily on the anion exchange membranes. The mainly negatively charged fouling producers, for example protein ions, are transported by the electric field to the anion exchange membranes.Item Open Access Influence of the wall on the dynamic behavior of homogeneous tubular reactors with a highly exothermic reaction(1974) Eigenberger, GerhartThe influence of the tube wall on the behavior of tubular reactors with a highly exothermic reaction was studied. The effect of heat accumulation in the wall has a considerable influence upon the transient behavior of the reactor. Because of this influence excess temperatures can occur if the feed temperature is lowered or the flow velocity is raised. For a gas phase reaction the transient behavior is determined almost completely by the heat capacity of the wall. An example of multiple steady states caused by axial heat conduction in the wall is given, and the influence of heat conduction in the wall is compared with that in the reaction mixture.Item Open Access Kinetic instabilities in catalytic reactions : a modelling approach(1976) Eigenberger, GerhartIt is the purpose of this contribution to show under which conditions relatively simple Langmuir-type rate mechanisms exhibit steady state multiplicity as well as periodic instabilities and may serve as models for experimentally observed phenomena.Item Open Access Investigation and control of fermentation processes using fermenter calorimetry(1992) Meier-Schneiders, Martin; Grosshans, Ulrich; Busch, Claudia; Eigenberger, GerhartIt is well known, that heat generation and total metabolic activity in biological systems are strongly correlated. Thus the heat production can provide important information for the study, supervision and control of biological fermentations. Microcalorimeters are widely used for studies concerning physiology, ecology, and pharmacology. They are very sensitive, but the measuring principle exhibits methodical disadvantages for its application in biotechnology (direct control of the fermentation inside of the measuring cell and sampling is impossible). Reaction calorimeters used in chemistry are too insensitive for the detection of small changes in heat generation. Therefore, we developed a new isothermal heat-flux calorimeter-fermenter with a working volume of 2l. The detection level for heat generating processes is 10 mW/l under standard fermenting conditions including agitation, aeration and pH-control. In situ sterilization of the apparatus can be handled easily. The calorimeter is thought to be a versatile tool for laboratory optimization of a fermentation. The aim of the presented work is to discuss what results have been obtained so far and how the heat signal can be used advantangeously in biotechnology.
