Negative-Index-Materials are a very new area of research. The first metamaterial having a negative refractive index was demonstrated in 2001. However, the theoretical concept of wave propagation in negative-index-materials was developed much earlier in 1968 by V. Veselago. The task of this work is to model negatively refracting photonic crystals and metamaterials in the microwave frequency regime. They can be investigated with a view to their potential applications at telecommunication wavelengths since the working principles of the structures remain the same irrespective of the operating frequency. Because of the scaling the dimensions of the materials are larger and so they can be fabricated much more easily and the measurements are much simpler. Metamaterials offer the possibility to build materials with customized material parameters. The usual unit cells of these mostly metallic periodic micro- or nanostructures consist of an artificial magnetic atom influencing the permeability and of metallic wires providing a negative permittivity. The period is much smaller than the wavelength. Therefore the global material parameters of the permittivity and the permeability can be defined. The first metamaterials were based on resonators. They had a narrow bandwidth and suffered from high losses. Meanwhile metamaterials have been demonstrated which consist of loaded transmission lines. They do not rely on the resonator principle. These lines are loaded with capacitors and inductors in a way that a negative refractive index is achieved. Photonic crystals are another means to build negatively refracting devices. They are also periodic structures but the wavelength is in the range of the lattice constant. Metallic or dielectric scatterers can be used. The explanation for the negative refraction phenomenon can be found in the band structure. The focusing capability of negatively refracting photonic crystals is investigated at 20 GHz in the material system TMM10 (Thermoset Ceramic Loaded Plastic) as waveguide and Teflon as cladding layer. This structure is an analogon to a Silicon-Silicondioxide optical waveguide. A focusing effect is realized by a two-dimensional photonic crystal consisting of holes in a slab waveguide. Simulation and experiment show this focusing effect for the first time in this material system. After the successful demonstration of the focusing capability a coupling experiment is set up. It comprises two identical waveguides facing each other with an 80 mm slab waveguide in between. One waveguide serves as source. It is shown that if photonic crystals are used in the slab waveguide the coupling efficiency to the other waveguide can be increased. The investigated resonant structures offer the potential to realize not only a pseudo negative refractive index but a real one with a negative permeability and a negative permittivity. The metallic cut-wire pair, which was the first magnetic atom reported in the literature to show a negative index at optical frequencies, is investigated at microwave frequencies. A negative index can be found around 10 GHz. To investigate the bulk behavior multilayer structures are simulated and measured. Transmission line based structures are also investigated. In this work a structure made of distributed network elements is set up. The hosting medium is a parallel plate waveguide. The network elements are short-circuited parallel plate waveguides and metallic vias. A negative refractive index can be observed at frequencies between 10 GHz and 11 GHz. The last section of this work deals with the scaling issues as the structures shall be used at optical frequencies. The dimensions of a wire pair are changed in such a way that the structure has a resonance frequency of 100 THz. It can be observed that the dimensions of metallic structures cannot be scaled directly as the optical properties of metals have to be taken into account. In recent years the working frequencies of metamaterials have reached the visible optical frequencies. Up to now, negative index behavior at optical frequencies has been demonstrated in single-layer structures, but efforts to build more complex volume materials are under way. There are already applications at microwave frequencies using transmission line based metamaterials. It is possible to build e.g. compact couplers or leaky wave antennas. Also so called cloaking devices can be realized. The further potential applications at optical frequencies of these materials are manifold. New optical functionalities could be realized. Waveguide coupling with an optimized photonic crystal structure which has been demonstrated by simulation and experiment in this work could be a key building block for future photonic integrated circuits.en
