The subject of this work is the mathematical description and numerical simulation of electrical devices like transformers, high voltage switch gears and generators. Especially, the goal of this work is the modelling and computation of electrical eddy current distributions, as well as derived quantities like the distributions of power losses and temperature. In the framework of this work a model for the computation of electrical current densities is derived which allows to imply the given data of a circuit model (amperages and frequency of the applied alternating currents) into the eddy current model at prescribed contacts. Therefore the given data is transformed into an appropriate transmission boundary condition for the magnetic field via the solution of an auxiliary problem in the contact cross section and subsequent computation of source terms on the boundary. The time harmonic Maxwell equations are approximated by the eddy current equations as the displacement currents are neglected. The whole system is then written as a system of boundary integral equations and it is solved via the boundary element method. Varying conductivity is handled via a domain decomposition method. Here, the definition of an appropriate Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is necessary. One has to take into account that the single layer potential operator is not invertible on the corresponding energy space. The Extension of the system about suitable Lagrange multipliers allows the stabilisation of the single layer potential and unique solvability of the system can be shown. For discretization Raviart Thomas elements on the boundary are used. The proof of a discrete stability condition yields unique solvability of the Galerkin boundary element method and gives quasioptimal asymptotic error estimates. For the simulation of the heat transport a special models with prescribed velocity profile in the exterior domain is derived. The velocity of the cooling flow is assumed to be independent of the temperature. Besides the full nonlinear heat transport problem a simplified linearizable heat conduction problem and a boundary layer model which gives a boundary condition via an ordinary differential equation in the domain of the cooling flow are derived and their unique solvability is shown under physically reasonable assumptions on the thermal conductivity and the velocity of the flow. The existence proof for the nonlinear heat transport problem is based on linearization and successive approximation. A solution is obtained from a sequence of solutions of the linear problem. Uniqueness is obtained from a weak maximum principle for quasi linear elliptic equations. The existence an asymptotic convergence of a finite element solution of the nonlinear heat transport problem is obtained in the same manner. The simplified model is reduced to the Laplace equation with nonlinear transmission conditions via the so called Kirchhoff transform. For discretization boundary elements can be used again. Besides the modelling and analysis of the eddy current problem with heat transport its numerical simulation is also part of this work. The construction of fast boundary element methods for both the eddy current problem and the heat transport problem is based on the adaptive cross approximation method (M.Bebendorf, S.Rjasanow). Here, the so called asymptotical smoothness, i.e. the smoothness of the integral kernels at separated source and evaluation points, is exploited. The kernel is approximated by an appropriate kernel expansion. It is shown that all kernels corresponding to the eddy current equations are asymptotically smooth. Especially, the smoothness constants which play an important role concerning the numerical effort are computed explicitly. As an application the electrical eddy current field is numerically computed in a magnetic valve an a bus bar.
