Unser "wir" - ein systemtheoretisches Modell von Gruppenidentitäten

Abstract

Der Essay versucht, mit Rückgriff auf die Arbeiten von Luhmann und anderen Systemtheoretikern ein systemtheoretisches Modell von Gruppenidentitäten zu entfalten. Die zentrale These lautet, dass Gruppenidentität nicht aus einem wie immer gearteten Gleichklang psychischer Systeme besteht. Statt dessen muss Gruppenidentität als ein kommunikatives Konstrukt verstanden werden. 'Gruppe' wird als ein eigenständiger Typ sozialer Systeme definiert. Gruppen rangieren auf einer Ebene mit Organisationen zwischen den Systemebenen Interaktion und Gesellschaft. In 'Common-Identity'-Gruppen wird der Gruppenzusammenhang über eine generalisierte Gruppenidentität konstruiert. Das Medium Gruppenidentität umfasst (a) eine Grenzziehung zwischen Gruppe und Umwelt, oft besonders gegenüber einer negativen Referenzgruppe. Dabei kommen Konflikte mit anderen Gruppen (z.B. bei Gangs) zum tragen. Außerdem beinhaltet die Gruppenidentität (b) eine inhaltliche Spezifizierung von Gruppen-kommunikation. Dazu gehört, dass Gruppenidentitäten kulturelle Schemata der Weltdeutung - etwa als 'Modelle des guten Lebens' - bereitstellt. Diese Gruppenkulturen entwickeln sich aufgrund der selbstreferentiellen Geschlossenheit der Gruppenkommunikation und laufen oft über eine normative Aufwertung der Gruppe gegenüber der Außenwelt.

The author tries to model group identities drawing on a systems theoretical framework. The essay claims that group identities should not be understood as the merging of psychic systems. Instead, it is argued, group identity is a social construction that arises out of communication and shapes communication. A 'group' is defined as a unique type of social systems. Groups are - like organisations - to be found on the meso-level between the levels interaction and society. In 'Common-identity groups', the construction of the group ties relies on a generalised group identity. Group identity is understood as a medium that contains (a) a symbolic boundary between the group and its environment. It often opposes the ingroup to a negative reference group. Thus, conflicts with other groups (as in gangs) play a special role for the persistence of a group identity. Additionally the group identity entails (b) a specification of communication content within the group. Thus the group identity relates to specific worldviews. These unique group cultures evolve out of the self-referential nature of group communication. And they often embrace a normative loading of the difference between Ingroup and Outgroup.
