Manufacturing companies are nowadays confronted with intense pressure from international competitors and shorter product life cycles, forcing them to shorten development times for new products. This makes time a decisive factor in the knowledge-intensive product development process. The aim is to develop a process for determining the areas of knowledge that will have the most impact on product development in the future. This involves conducting empirical surveys to determine what is required of an integrated knowledge management system, and reconciling these requirements with existing knowledge management approaches. This forms the basis for developing an approach that enables strategic fields of business, relevant areas of expertise and the knowledge flows that these contain to be ascertained, in order to evaluate the suitability of necessary actions and intervention measures when it comes to satisfying knowledge requirements on an ongoing basis. The central outcome of the study indicates that companies classify all aspects of knowledge management as important to very important, albeit placing special emphasis on the practical application of acquired knowledge. This is significant, as it demonstrates the need to develop an approach that can be adopted universally. Knowing what is generally required of a usable knowledge management system means these requirements can be compared to the approaches that are already being taken, in order to reveal which requirements are already being covered by these existing approaches and which still need to be met by a new process. This brings the following shortcomings to light: existing approaches do not examine the interaction between different knowledge management instruments within a system, nor do they examine possible ways to implement these instruments in existing systems. A precise localization of the concrete knowledge problems including associated proposals for solutions also does not occur, which is particularly surprising given that the identification of existing problems represents the basis of any form of knowledge management. The process begins with the identification of relevant strategic business areas with a possible impact on the future of the company. The result is a defined set of priorities that classifies the strategic business areas according to the need to establish an intervention approach to key knowledge fields for the future. The next step involves selecting the knowledge fields that will be of the greatest importance to the company’s future business strategy from among those identified as being relevant in terms of future earnings potential. The combined result is represented in the form of a knowledge portfolio. Key fields of knowledge for a company’s future are those that have the greatest impact on the product development process, and for which there is a correspondingly strong incentive to improve the way knowledge is handled. The exact adjustments that are required are filtered out by identifying flows of knowledge within the central knowledge fields for the future and attributing these to a predefined reference process. The knowledge flows within each area of knowledge are evaluated on the basis of the effectiveness and efficiency of the knowledge structure matrix. Within each specific area of knowledge, the subarea that exerts the greatest leverage is identified, based on the information revealed when the knowledge structure matrix was defined and the shortcomings detected within it. The most critical process transition within each specific area of knowledge is also identified. Each area of knowledge can be split into a number of separate entities, each with specific common features, which allows the definition of multiple possible intervention approaches. The objective is to work out a list of priorities that indicates which combination of process transition and individual knowledge field exerts the greatest leverage for possible intervention approaches. The subarea that has been rated the highest is selected for further analysis. The following step is an evaluation of process transitions within the chosen partial knowledge field in terms of the separate knowledge activities. The outcome is the knowledge activity for which the need for action is highest in each particular subarea, based on the critical process transitions that have been identified. Potential intervention approaches are chosen based on their impact upon the various knowledge activities Exploratory expert discussions were held to identify and evaluate the intervention approaches on offer, carried out on the basis of narrative interviews and a guideline for expert discussions derived from these interviews. Practicable and recommended intervention approaches are those that cover the most knowledge activities. Given that there are usually several intervention approaches that could potentially be implemented, it is necessary to evaluate them. Evaluating the efficiency of the selected intervention approaches is carried out based on their usefulness, that is to say, based on the effectiveness and scope of the approach. Effectiveness here denotes the degree to which objectives are achieved, without taking into account the effort required (efficiency) or the costs generated by the chosen approach as opposed to alternate intervention approaches. The approaches proposed for discussion are evaluated and presented in a cost-benefit analysis of the portfolio, which in turn defines the order of priority of the proposed intervention approaches. The process model for establishing intervention approaches in key areas of knowledge of future importance to product development thus makes it possible to identify which approaches are most likely to improve knowledge management activities.
