Die Überdachung der antiken Arena in Nîmes

Abstract

Seit 1988 wird die antike Arena in Nîmes, Südfrankreich, auch in der Winterperiode für Veranstaltungen benützt. Das unter Denkmalschutz stehende Gebäude wird hierzu jeweils im Herbst mit einer Dachkonstruktion von 5000 m2 Grundfläche überdacht. Das saisonale Bauwerk, zu dem auch Heizungs- und Beleuchtungsanlagen gehören, wird jeweils im April wieder demontiert. Die Forderung nach einem stützenfreien Innenraum von 4000 m2 Grundfläche und die Besonderheiten der jährlichen Montage/Demontage führten zum Entwurf eines vollkommen zerlegbaren Bauwerkes mit extrem niedrigem Gewicht. Das Dachtragwerk besteht im wesentlichen aus einem Luftkissen, das in seiner Form durch einen dünnen Stahlring stabilisiert wird. Die in Nîmes realisierte Größenordnung dieses Konstruktionsprinzips ist bisher einmalig. The Roman arena in Nîmes has been a center of public and cultural life for about two thousand years. Now, since 1988, the arena can be used also during wintertime. For this, the center part of the building can be covered with a lightweight roof structure, which is 5000 sqm in plan. Considerations concerning the preservation of historical monuments require, that the roof structure has to be implanted each year in October and that it has to be removed the next April. This and the requirements for a column-free space of 4000 sqm in plan yielded to the design of a structure of extreme lightness which can be installed and removed easily. The main part of the roof structure consists of an air-inflated membrane-cushion which has been the first one to be realized in this size.
