The reaction of organylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphines and the corresponding tris(trimethylsilyl) compound with carboxylic acid chlorides allows surprisingly easy access to the phosphaalkenes, the keto-enol isomeric diacylphosphines and their metal derivatives, and phosphaalkynes. Surprisingly, the corresponding reactions with the chlorides of inorganic acids have hardly been investigated. The product derives its reactivity from the two trimethylsilyl leaving groups; it can furthermore react as a Lewis base through the lone pair at phosphorus. It has been utilized as such in the synthesis of organic and organoelement compounds, but until now phenylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphine has hardly played a role in inorganic chemistry. In the current work, a series of further compounds containing tri- and pentavalent phosphorus have been isolated and characterised with conventional spectroscopic methods and X-ray structural analysis. The initial investigations into this area of research involved carrying out reactions of group 13 compounds with phenylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphine; here the synthesis of the borane adduct was successful. The Compound forms from the reaction with the BH3-thf adduct, whereby phenylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphine, acting as Lewis base, replaces THF in its role as BH3 monomer stabilizer. In the case of the reaction of phenylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphine with compounds of group 15, the synthesis of 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)diphosphine could be synthesized. The R,R, S,S or R,S stereoisomer could form. In the 31P{1H} NMR spectrum however, only one singlet at -108 ppm is found, as also observed by M. Baudler and H. Schumann and R. Fischer. In the case of reactions of phenylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphine with group 16 compounds, the reaction of phenylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphine and para-tolylsulfinyl chloride in n-pentane lead to 1,2-diphenyl-1,2-bis(para-tolylsulfenyl)diphospine. The 31P{1H} chemical shifts (27.1 and 33.9 ppm) lie in the range of values found for similar diphosphines, however the observance of two signals shows that, in contrast to the compound discussed above, stereoisomers are present. A single crystal of 1-adamantanesulfinyl chloride suitable for X-ray structural analysis was isolated during the synthesis of (1-adamantylsulfenyl)phenyl(trimethylsiloxy)phosphine. 1-Adamantanesulfinyl chloride is obtained according to the method of H. Stetter et al., where a mixture of aluminium(III) chloride and thionyl chloride is combined with solid adamantine at -15°C and the raw product is subsequently purified by distillation. Phenylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphine does react with 1-adamantanesulfinyl chloride in n-pentane; however the yield of (1-adamantylsulfenyl)phenyl(trimethylsiloxy)phosphine was very low - only a few crystals were obtained. The 31P{1H} chemical shift of compound IV (119.26 ppm) is in the expected range. The isolation of a hexameric dioxophenylphosphorane was possible via the reaction of phenylbis(trimethylsilyl)phosphine with phenylsulfonyl chloride in n-pentane. A singlet at +1.5 ppm was observed in the 31P{1H} NMR spectrum. The compound cocrystallises with a molecule of 1,2-dimethoxyethane. Both the hexamer and 1,2-dimethoxyethane molecule contain a centre of inversion. Each of the three phenyl substituents directed in the same direction form a pocket containing half of the cocrystallizing ether. The twelve-membered heterocycle is effectively planar; only the atoms O22 and P3 and their symmetry-generated partners lie 50.4 and 127.2 pm out of the plane formed by the remaining atoms. Several cyclo-hexaphosphates form a very similar ring conformation, in which the phenyl substituent of this dioxophosphorane is substituted by a negatively charged oxygen atom. As part of the current work, the other known cyclo-hexaphosphate structures were analysed and the various conformations compared.
