So far, technical systems and their characteristics have not been comprehensively presented in a standard framework that relates to the methods, tools and resources of engineering design methodology. Also a general approach is missing that allows for presenting technical systems regardless of their technical discipline whilst they are under development. A procedure is described for systematically exploring the characteristics of technical systems. This procedure especially takes account of the phases I (definition) and II (layout design) of the engineering design process of VDI 2221. Taken from engineering design an example will explain this procedure focusing on hybrid intelligent design elements (HIKE). They are continuously under development within the research group DFG FOR 981 HIKE of the University of Stuttgart, funded by the German Research Foundation. The procedure is compatible with established engineering design processes, methods, tools and resources. It especially considers the approaches from engineering design theory for representing characteristics and properties. The procedure aims at providing information about technical systems that relates to an engineering design process. It is aligned with and based upon the presentation of technical systems given by Pahl. The information is structured as follows: The system is depicted (a) and the general effect is specified (b). The function structure (c), the basic function(s) (d) and the task in a control loop (e) explain the functionality of the system. The embodiment of the effects (f), surface characteristics (g) and gestalt elements (h) refer to the gestalt of the system. The working structure (i) and the working principle (j) concretize how the functions are realized. The element model (k) (also known as contact and channel model [C&CM]) links functions with gestalt. The amendment to the list of basic characteristics (l) comprises specific characteristics of the considered system. The items (b) - (l) are directly addressed by the procedure. The design variants (m) refer to different layouts of a system. Design guidelines (n) as well as methods, tools, and resources (o) consider the relationship between design process and system. References (p) tell about the origin of information and further reading. The items (m) - (p) are not directly addressed by the procedure. It focusses on describing the system and its characteristics. It does not aim at describing the design process. However, the items (a) - (l) can be taken into account as a source of information for this purpose. The general effect describes the use of the system. The function structure details on the sub-functions. Starting from a graphical representation of the system, the sub-systems are identified in step. The system is analysed especially with respect to gestalt elements according to Koller. The working elements (WE) and the working element pairs (WEP) are determined. Sub-functions and effects are allocated to each other. Sub-functions and sub-systems are assigned to each other, accordingly. The boundary elements (GE) and the structure elements (SE) are identified. Furthermore, the working principles are specified. This allows for characterizing the channel and support structure (CSS). The subsystems are assigned to WE, GE as well as SE. Thus, sub-functions can be allocated to a position where the function is put into effect. The working principles establish the working structure. Finally, the contact and channel model (C&CM) is compiled. The characteristics identified during this procedure provide an amendment of the basic characteristics list by Pahl. The results are summarized and structured in an extended version based upon Pahl et al.. The theoretical evaluation indicated that the procedure meets most of the requirements regarding revisability, soundness, comprehensibility, structuring a task, compatibility, flexibility, practical relevance, usefulness and problem specificity. The practical evaluation with probands showed similar results. However, the need for further development was revealed. Comprehensibility, effectiveness and efficiency have to be improved. Furthermore, problem specificity should be increased in order to motivate users.
