Based on the state of the art, the present thesis expands design guidelines for grease filled non-contacting sealing systems (FBFWD) to seal dry particles and provides practical advices for their reliable operation. There is no contact between the parts of the sealing system moving relatively to each other. The sealing system therefore works without wear. To seal dry particles, the grease filled gap must be opened. This means that there are two layers of grease adhering at the static and rotating part of the sealing system which don’t contact each other. Particles entering the sealing System are bounded by the grease and are prevented from further penetration into the sealing system. To permanently use FBFWD for sealing dry particles, the contaminated grease in the sealing system has to be replaced by new grease in time. This has been investigated in the context of the present thesis by bench tests with new, aged and polluted grease. A recommendation for the necessary amount of grease to relubricate the sealing system is formulated based on the test results. Furthermore, a model was created to explain the motion of the dirt particles bounded by the grease. The motion of the particles in the grease occurs when the yield point is exceeded locally in the region of the particles by the centrifugal force on them. The centrifugal force is caused by the Rotation of the shaft and is pointing radially outwards. Because of the opened gap, the motion of the particles in the model is only caused by the centrifugal force, not by the flow of the grease. The approximate verification of the model shows, that the model is correct and that there is a motion of the particles in the grease caused by the centrifugal force already upon below the rotation speed which is needed to ensure an opened gap. In the unfavorable case, particles are moved to the wall of the gap and can consequently no longer be replaced by relubricating the sealing system. The model is therefore the initial point to reduce the installation space for the sealing system, because particles can not be removed from certain gaps (every second axial gap) by relubricating the sealing system. In addition to important operating instructions, existing design guidelines are expanded in that way that an unerringly design of FBFWD is possible. Due to the suitable positioning of the sealing system in relation to its surroundings (for example a grease-lubricated bearing), the distribution of the grease in the system (in this case existing of a grooved ball bearing which is sealed with non-contacting sealing systems on both sides) can be regulated and the separation of excess grease can be controlled. The distribution of the grease inside the two sealing systems is primarily affected by the conveying direction of the sealing system and the diameter of the gap inlet, by which the sealing system is supplied with fresh grease. The conveying direction is pointing radially outwards and is caused by the centrifugal force acting on the grease inside the gaps. It can point into the system or out of it. The gap height has no detectable influence on the distribution of the grease. Further results of bench tests show that, with an ideally designed FBFWD, the Installation space required for the sealing system can be reduced to an input area with a following axial gap. Existing operating parameters to guarantee an opened gap could not be confirmed. Observations suggest that the shear-thinning flow behavior of lubricating greases and special flow phenomena just before the opening are causing the opening of the gap. To investigate those effects with a flow simulation a new flow law is formulated. With the results of the present thesis, both the designer and users of FBFWD have extensive information to unerringly design grease filled non-contacting sealing systems to seal dry particles as well as ensure their permanent and reliable operation.
