In order to take a step closer to the realistic and computational efficient planning of material, structural and constructional measures for avoiding thermal cracking in large RCC dams, a framework is developed in the present work, with the help of which it is possible to take into account the essential influencing factors in a more comprehensive way, and calculate temperature and stress development in the concrete during the construction and operation of large RCC dams efficiently. Starting from the well-known Fourier differential equations, mathematical relations are presented in chapter 2, which allow calculating temperature in the concrete iteratively by taking into account the coupling between temperature and hydration evolution, and by taking into account boundary and initial conditions more realistically. During the calculation solar radiation and evaporation are integrated as heat fluxes directly into the Cauchy-Neumann boundary conditions, where both the Cauchy boundary conditions (heat exchange between surfaces of the dam/foundation and the air) and the Neumann boundary conditions (given heat fluxes to consider solar radiation and evaporation) are taken into consideration. At the presence of evaporation the convective heat exchange between dam/foundation and air is iteratively calculated together with the temperature of the dam/foundation and the evaporation on its surfaces. Global solar radiation on the surfaces of the dam can be calculated by using the solar radiation models and other usually available meteorological data (air temperature, air pressure, relative humidity and duration of sunshine) at or near the dam site. For the estimation of short time evaporation on wet surfaces the Penmann-Brutsaert model is preferred. In chapter 3 equations, simplifications and assumptions for calculating strains and stresses in plain concrete structures due to hydration are introduced. The generally accepted equilibrium equations remain unchanged for the relevant problem statement. Stress-strain relations necessary for the stress/strain computation are described by the generalized Hooke's law, in which inelastic immediate deformation, deformations due to creep and shrinkage/expansion, and temperature deformation are summarized as initial deformation. The choice of necessary parameters and formulas for describing the aging concrete properties, such as developments of elastic moduli and strengths, creep, shrinkage, temperature deformation and Poisson's ratio, are justified on the basis of the research results indicated in the references. Equations presented in the previous two chapters for calculating temperature and stresses are numerically implemented in chapter 4, using the methods of finite elements. The reduction of computation effort is acchieved through adaptive time steps control and combination of concrete lifts during temperature and stress calculations. The finite element methods implemented in chapter 4 for incremental calculation of temperature and stresses are coded in the program package Tesa'', which is partly based on the program package KASCADE''. With the programs Tesa'' and Ansys'' an extensive parameter and case study is carried out. Temperature and stresses in a fictitious RCC dam are computed under different conditions, and the emphasis is put on the following two aspects: (1) Methods for reducing computation effort; (2)Influences of climatic conditions (air temperature, solar radiation and wind velocity) as well as construction and structural design related parameters (initial concrete temperature, duration of the spray water cooling and distance between transverse joints) on temperature and stress development in the dam. The results are documented, evaluated and discussed in chapter 5, from which some useful conclusions for controlling thermal cracks in massive concrete structures can be drawn. The application of the developed methods on concrete projects, as utilizing the interwinded programs Tesa'' and Ansys'' for parameter and case studies in the present work, allows a more precise planning of structural and constructional measures to avoid thermal cracking, such as arrangement of transverse joints, spray water cooling and control of the initial concrete temperature.
