Item Open Access Touching data with PropellerHand(2022) Achberger, Alexander; Heyen, Frank; Vidackovic, Kresimir; Sedlmair, MichaelImmersive analytics often takes place in virtual environments which promise the users immersion. To fulfill this promise, sensory feedback, such as haptics, is an important component, which is however not well supported yet. Existing haptic devices are often expensive, stationary, or occupy the user’s hand, preventing them from grasping objects or using a controller. We propose PropellerHand, an ungrounded hand-mounted haptic device with two rotatable propellers, that allows exerting forces on the hand without obstructing hand use. PropellerHand is able to simulate feedback such as weight and torque by generating thrust up to 11 N in 2-DOF and a torque of 1.87 Nm in 2-DOF. Its design builds on our experience from quantitative and qualitative experiments with different form factors and parts. We evaluated our prototype through a qualitative user study in various VR scenarios that required participants to manipulate virtual objects in different ways, while changing between torques and directional forces. Results show that PropellerHand improves users’ immersion in virtual reality. Additionally, we conducted a second user study in the field of immersive visualization to investigate the potential benefits of PropellerHand there.Item Open Access Datamator : an authoring tool for creating datamations via data query decomposition(2023) Guo, Yi; Cao, Nan; Cai, Ligan; Wu, Yanqiu; Weiskopf, Daniel; Shi, Danqing; Chen, QingDatamation is designed to animate an analysis pipeline step by step, serving as an intuitive and efficient method for interpreting data analysis outcomes and facilitating easy sharing with others. However, the creation of a datamation is a difficult task that demands expertise in diverse skills. To simplify this task, we introduce Datamator, a language-oriented authoring tool developed to support datamation generation. In this system, we develop a data query analyzer that enables users to generate an initial datamation effortlessly by inputting a data question in natural language. Then, the datamation is displayed in an interactive editor that affords users the ability to both edit the analysis progression and delve into the specifics of each step undertaken. Notably, the Datamator incorporates a novel calibration network that is able to optimize the outputs of the query decomposition network using a small amount of user feedback. To demonstrate the effectiveness of Datamator, we conduct a series of evaluations including performance validation, a controlled user study, and expert interviews.Item Open Access Item-level usage statistics : a review of current practices and recommendations for normalization and exchange(2008) Merk, Christine; Scholze, Frank; Windisch, NilsPurpose The JISC Usage Statistics Review Project aims to formulate a fundamental scheme for recording usage data and to propose a standard for its aggregation to provide meaning-ful and comparable item-level usage statistics for electronic documents like e.g. re-search papers and scientific resources. Approach A core element of the project has been a stakeholder workshop. This workshop was held in Berlin on July 7th and 8th 2008. Representatives of key stakeholder groups (repo-sitories, libraries, COUNTER, IRStats, JISC, LogEc, MESUR, OA-Statistics and other Open Access projects) were invited. During the workshop a fundamental scheme for the recording and the exchange of log files was discussed as well as the normalization of data collected. Findings The following mandatory elements describing usage events were agreed upon during the stakeholder workshop: Who: Identification of user/session, What: Item identification and type of request performed (e.g. full-text, front-page, inclu-ding failed/partially fulfilled requests), When: Date and time, Usage event ID. The following elements were regarded as optional: From where: Referrer/the referring entity and Identity of the service. Usage events should be exchanged in the form of OpenURL Context Objects using OAI. Automated access (e.g. robots) should be tagged. The definition of automated access has to be straightforward with an option of gradual refinement. Users have to be identified unambiguously, but without recording personal data to avoid conflicts with privacy laws. Policies on statistics should be formulated for the repository community as well as the publishing community. Information about statistics policies should be avai-lable on services like OpenDOAR and RoMEO. Originality This paper is based on the detailed project report to the JISC, available at http://ie-repository.jisc.ac.uk/250/Item Open Access Investigation of oxide layer development of X6CrNiNb18-10 stainless steel exposed to high-temperature water(2024) Veile, Georg; Hirpara, Radhika; Lackmann, Simon; Weihe, StefanThe oxide layer development of X6CrNiNb18-10 (AISI 347) during exposure to high-temperature water has been investigated. Stainless steels are known to form a dual oxide layer in corrosive environments. The secondary Fe-rich oxide layer has no significant protective effect. In contrast, the primary Cr-rich oxide layer is known to reach a stabilized state, protecting the base metal from further oxidation. This study’s purpose was to determine the development of oxide layer dimensions over exposure time using SEM, TEM and EDX line scans. While a parabolic development of Cr in the protective primary layer and Fe in the secondary layer was observed, the dimensions of the Ni layer remained constant. Ni required the presence of a pronounced Fe-rich secondary layer before being able to reside on the outer secondary layer. With increasing immersion time, the Ni element fraction surpassed the Cr element fraction in the secondary layer. Oxide growth on the secondary layer could be observed. After 480 h, nearly the entire surface was covered by the outer oxide layer. In the metal matrix, no depletion of Cr or Ni could be observed over time; however, an increased presence of Cr and Ni in the primary layer was found at the expense of Fe content. The Nb-stabilized stainless steel was subject to the formation of Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5), with the quantity and magnitude of element fraction increasing over exposure time.Item Open Access Testing and evaluation of anchor channels under fatigue loading(2020) Fröhlich, Thilo; Lotze, DieterCast-in anchor channels are used to connect steel components to concrete structures e.g., for elevators, cranes or machines, where repeated load cycles require verification against fatigue failure. The fatigue resistance of anchor channels may be determined by tests according to the interactive method, which provides a complete description of the S/N curve from one to infinite load cycles according to the current assessment document. This procedure differs from conventional fatigue concepts, which do not consider loads that are part of low cycle fatigue, but also question the general existence of an endurance limit. An alternative approach presented in this paper is based on the assumption that the S/N curve can be approximated by a bilinear function. The procedure for the evaluation of fatigue tests on anchor channels embedded in concrete is described. A comparison with the current qualification criteria is given by a test example to discuss the applicability of the proposed method.Item Open Access Effect of weld length on strength, fatigue behaviour and microstructure of intersecting stitch-friction stir welded AA 6016-T4 sheets(2023) Walz, Dominik; Göbel, Robin; Werz, Martin; Weihe, StefanFriction stir welding is a promising joining process for boosting lightweight construction in the industrial and automotive sector by enabling the weldability of high-strength aluminum alloys. However, the high process forces usually result in large and heavy equipment for this joining method, which conflicts with flexible application. In order to circumvent this issue, a friction stir welding gun has been developed which is capable of producing short stitch welds-either stand-alone as an alternative to spot welds or merging into each other appearing like a conventional friction stir weld. In this study, the influence of the stitch seam length on the strength properties of intersecting friction stir welds is investigated, and the weld is characterized. For this purpose, EN AW-6016 T4 sheets were welded in butt joint configuration with varying stitch lengths between 2 and 15 mm. Both the static and dynamic strength properties were investigated, and hardness and temperature measurements were carried out. The results show a scalability of the tensile strength as well as the fatigue strength over the stitch seam length, while the substitute proof strength is not affected. Hereby, the tensile strength reached up 80% of the base materials tensile strength with the chosen parameter setup. Usually the research results are published in a publication, whereas the underlying software and data resulting from the software is not available. Consequently, the results which are discussed in an article can be difficult to reproduce. Initiatives like the FAIR data principles try to give an idea how research data can be stored in order to reuse research results. This article describes how the FAIR data principles may be applied for research software in simulation engineering and give an idea how infrastructure services can help researchers handling their research software.Item Open Access Performance comparison of CFD microbenchmarks on diverse HPC architectures(2024) Galeazzo, Flavio C. Gregor; Ruopp, AndreasOpenFOAM is a CFD software widely used in both industry and academia. The exaFOAM project aims at enhancing the HPC scalability of OpenFOAM, while identifying its current bottlenecks and proposing ways to overcome them. For the assessment of the software components and the code profiling during the code development, lightweight but significant benchmarks should be used. The answer was to develop microbenchmarks, with a small memory footprint and short runtime. The name microbenchmark does not mean that they have been prepared to be the smallest possible test cases, as they have been developed to fit in a compute node, which usually has dozens of compute cores. The microbenchmarks cover a broad band of applications: incompressible and compressible flow, combustion, viscoelastic flow and adjoint optimization. All benchmarks are part of the OpenFOAM HPC Technical Committee repository and are fully accessible. The performance using HPC systems with Intel and AMD processors (x86_64 architecture) and Arm processors (aarch64 architecture) have been benchmarked. For the workloads in this study, the mean performance with the AMD CPU is 62% higher than with Arm and 42% higher than with Intel. The AMD processor seems particularly suited resulting in an overall shorter time-to-solution.Item Open Access Local bilinear computation of Jacobi sets(2022) Klötzl, Daniel; Krake, Tim; Zhou, Youjia; Hotz, Ingrid; Wang, Bei; Weiskopf, DanielWe propose a novel method for the computation of Jacobi sets in 2D domains. The Jacobi set is a topological descriptor based on Morse theory that captures gradient alignments among multiple scalar fields, which is useful for multi-field visualization. Previous Jacobi set computations use piecewise linear approximations on triangulations that result in discretization artifacts like zig-zag patterns. In this paper, we utilize a local bilinear method to obtain a more precise approximation of Jacobi sets by preserving the topology and improving the geometry. Consequently, zig-zag patterns on edges are avoided, resulting in a smoother Jacobi set representation. Our experiments show a better convergence with increasing resolution compared to the piecewise linear method. We utilize this advantage with an efficient local subdivision scheme. Finally, our approach is evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively in comparison with previous methods for different mesh resolutions and across a number of synthetic and real-world examples.
