Item Open Access Item Open Access Christopher Ray, The evolution of relativity : Bristol ..., Adam Hilger, 1987; [Rezension](1988) Hentschel, Klaus-Item Open Access Spatial economics and totalitarian temptations : the complex biography of August Lösch (1906-1945)(2023) Take, GunnarAmong the German spatial economists August Lösch is arguably the one who has had the biggest lasting influence on international academic literature. After his death in May 1945, a legend was created according to which he was a fierce opponent to national socialism. This was part of the attempts of his former colleagues and of the German economics community at large to disguise the extent of their own involvement and their agency in advising economic and social policies of the Nazi regime. The political context of spatial planning during the Second World War was particularly damning as it in many cases presupposed genocides on nations such as Poles and Russians and on religious groups such as Jews. It was precisely with regards to Eastern Europe that Lösch’s theoretical contributions were deemed to be particularly valuable. However, the legend of his supposed opposition contained a grain of truth as he was indeed appalled by central aspects of Nazi ideology. Yet, the ability of a totalitarian regime such as the “Third Reich” to integrate the contributions of a brilliant mind and somebody who saw himself as an independent and unpolitical scholar into its decentralized and collaborative spatial research apparatus is what makes Lösch’s biography particularly interesting and relevant today.Item Open Access Item Open Access Der Verkauf Hohenbergs an Österreich vom 26. Oktober 1381 : Überlegungen zum Hohenbergjahr 1981(1981) Quarthal, FranzAm 26. Oktober 1981 jährte sich zum 600. I will show that this was the case whenever these empirically testable effects were closely linked to his newly proposed fundamental principles which still lacked empirical support, focussing on the examples of gravitational redshift (linked to the equivalence principle between gravitational and acceleration fields), of light deflection (linked to mass-energy equivalency and the curvature of space-time), and of interferometric experiments (linked to the two axioms of the special theory of relativity).Item Open Access Item Open Access Erwin Finlay Freundlich and testing Einstein's theory of relativity(1994) Hentschel, KlausThis article covers aspects of the life and career of ERWIN FINLAY FREUNDLICH, the first German astronomer to consider seriously Einstein's theory of relativity and gravitation. In doing so, he made himself so unpopular among his colleagues that nothing less than Einstein's powerful intercession was necessary for him to be able to continue his research on the experimental verification of this theory.
