Since many decades there have been numerous observations of saturation overshoot and saturation fingering in porous media during gravity driven infiltration experiments. Nevertheless, research in mathematics, physics, earth science and engineering still deals with describing these observations. Both, the prediction of saturation overshoot in experiments and the theoretical understanding of saturation overshoot are open questions. Moreover, the connection between saturation overshoot and saturation fingering is still unclear. Several approaches discuss the theoretical modeling of nonmonotone saturation profiles and the initiation and propagation of overshoots, see Beliaev et al (Transport in Porous Media 43 (2001), p.487) Cuesta et al, European Journal of Applied Mathematics 11 (2000), p.381), Cueto-Felgueroso et al (Physical Review Letters 101 (2008), p.244504), DiCarlo et al (Transport in Porous Media 91 (2012), p.955), Doster et al (Physical Review E 86 (2012), p.016317) and Eliassi et al (Water Resources Research 38 (2002), p.1234). In Hilfer and Steinle (The European Physical Journal Special Topics 223 (2014), p.2323) an approach for the propagation of travelling nonmonotone saturation profiles was introduced. Only hysteresis in the relative permeabilities is used to model imbibition and drainage processes during the propagation of the saturation overshoots. The above mentioned extensions of the Darcy theory are not used. The propagation velocities of the saturation front are calculated with a Rankine-Hugoniot condition using the fractional ow functions. Travelling saturation overshoots with constant propagation velocity and constant plateau width are possible for delicately chosen parameters and initial and boundary values. Here this approach from Hilfer and Steinle (The European Physical Journal Special Topics 223 (2014), p.2323) is used for the Darcy theory with a general hysteresis model with graph dependent relative permeabilities and capillary pressures. The resulting initial and boundary value problem is solved analytically and numerically. The traditional Darcy theory as well as the hysteretic Darcy theory is investigated with the method of nonlinear semigroups. In case of the traditional Darcy theory with a specific initial condition existence, uniqueness and boundedness of solutions is shown. These previous solutions are applied on the hysteretic Darcy theory. Within a simplified hysteresis model and under adequate assumptions for the parameters and the initial condition and boundary values the existence and uniqueness of solutions is proven. For nonmonotone initial conditions these solutions are also nonmonotone. Furthermore, the Rankine-Hugoniot condition is used to study the propagation of nonmonotone saturation profiles. The result of this study is the existence of saturation overshoots with constant, broadening or shrinking overshoot plateaus depending on the material and fluid parameters and on the initial and boundary values. Also the hysteresis model influences the type of propagation, either as a travelling overshoot or with a broadening or shrinking plateau width. Additionally, the theoretical approach to describe propagation of saturation overshoots does not require gravitational acceleration. Therefore theoretically an overshoot can also occur during horizontal displacement processes. In the numerical part of the work simulations with a huge variation in the material and fluid parameters as well as the initial and boundary values and the hysteresis model were performed. The numerical simulations confirm the analytical results and moreover it is shown that the solutions are independent of hysteresis in the capillary pressure or the capillary coefficients. But the solutions strongly depend on the initial and boundary values. As a result the saturation overshoots develop qualitatively different time evolutions. Additionally, infiltration experiments are modelled within the hysteretic Darcy theory. The numerical solutions are in almost perfect agreement with the experimental data in terms of propagation velocities, overshoot width and overshoot height. Furthermore, the influence of the formulation of the Darcy theory is investigated numerically. For a suitable choice of boundary conditions the numerical solutions are almost identical and thus saturation profiles are independent of the formulation. Last but not least a first classification of saturation fingering during flow processes in two dimensions is done. Numerical simulations reveal that a saturation finger can only persist for larges times if there exists an overshoot in the finger tip. Here it is shown that the Darcy theory with hysteretic relative permeabilities suffices to describe travelling nonmonotone saturation profiles. Moreover, theoretically nonmonotone saturation overshoots with an increasing or decreasing plateau width exist. On the one hand it is necessary to continue theoretical investigations and numerical simulation on flow processes and saturation fingering in two dimensions. On the other hand experiments with quasi onedimensional porous media should be done to verify the theoretical results on non travelling overshoots. In cooperation with the Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems (IWS) at the University of Stuttgart nonmonotone saturation profiles were calculated with two different numerical implementations and were compared, see Schneider et al (Transport in Porous Media 121 (2018), No.3). It is shown that the deviation of the numerical solutions are very small and therefore the propagation of saturation overshoots is independent of the numerical solution scheme.en
